He ran 3:30-3:31 multiple times in Nike Victory. Yes he could have been top 5. Would he have? Harder to say. But there is no question at his peak he was capable of it. Bad take.
I think he could've been top 5 or podium, but maybe not win. Centro is a great tactician and people don't give him nearly enough credit for his win in Rio. Doesn't matter what the time is, a win is a win, especially for an olympic gold medal.
Was thinking about this right when it finished. I think this would of been a perfect race for him and very disappointed to not see the king in the race.
Centro ran 3:30.4 in 2015. Im not as big a believer in the new spikes as some, but have to think they make at least a 0.4 difference to take him to 3:29.

Absoultely could not have been top 5 in that race. His LIFETIME pr would have put him in 5th (barely). I think at best he would have been 7th there, behind 6th place Cheruiyot, who ran 3:30.69, which is less than 0.3 slower than Centro's lifetime PR.
Yes, he was a master tactician. No, he was not a good "fast championship" racer even under any circumstances.
Kind of takes away from his legacy knowing he would never have been top 5 in a race like this, no?

I think peak Centro could have done exactly what Wightman did, assuming he tucked into a good position and timed his kick the same way. Centro could run 3:30 just like all these other guys and with the new shoes and the Eugene track I'm sure he could have run 3:29.
Besides his Olympic gold he also has World Championship silver and bronze so it's not like Centro is a fluke. I wonder if Wightman will win any more medals moving forward?
im not seeing the new spikes doing anything for the high level pros. maybe they make lower runners with mechanical deficiencies a bit better, but the professional 1500 times haven't been anything special. and the 800 has been almost putrid for a couple years.

Romo’s lifetime PR woudlve put him in last before the race actually happened
I watched Wightman and saw a tactically savvy runner like centro who evolved to run in the fast 1500 era
