He’s still the best marathoner in the USA by a decent margin. Why wouldn’t he collect a few more paydays at world majors and run the Olympics one more time in 2024?
Can see it going either way. Could be a natural time to hang it up, but on the other hand he's probably got 3-4 more years of real competitive marathon running in him if he wants to push it (look at Kipchoge and even Bekele), and he ran great in Chicago last year. Guessing he'll keep it going for awhile after getting healthy. We'll see.
Retire and do what? Some made-up job at Nike? What is he trained for? Was he graduated with a useful skill?
Was thinking the same thing…he’s not like able or beloved like Meb to just hop around from expo to expo posing for photos with hobby joggers. He has too much of a cloud hanging around from Salazar to go into coaching like Shalane, and he’s certainly not interesting enough to go into media like Kara or Des.

I agree with this. He’s only 36. Meb won Boston two weeks shy of his 39th birthday and made it to the Olympics at 40.
I think a big factor in Rupp’s decision will be whether or not he can resolve the back issues that have been bothering him. It must be difficult to train at an elite level with back pain.
That's probably between him, his wife, his coach, and God. I am sure after he takes some time to recover from the race and his injury, he will make some sort of announcement.
Personally, as a trail runner, I would love to see Rupp tackle the trails. Not necessarily ultras, but maybe the Sierre-Zinal or even just the Trail Half Champs. But he has never indicated an interest and hasn't run an xc race in forever so probably never.

I guess Shalane doesn’t have a “cloud hanging around” from Schumacher? It is un-freaking-believable how delusional you people are. Shalane is a hypocrite in the greatest sense of the word.

I'd love to see anybody move to the trails but I don't think Galen's rhythm running style is suited for that

Rich people don't have to work. He can spend the rest of his life playing video games
