Late 30s, make low six figures, steady job, 2 kids + wife (who works, but makes less). I want to be my own boss (although I know everyone is beholden to customers, etc.) and have spent the last couple years thinking of starting a business. Since I’m the breadwinner and have kids, I know this is a huge risk and won’t be easy.
Lately I’ve been thinking about starting up my own supplement store. Nutrition is definitely something I’m passionate about and I see a market for endurance athletes and aging boomers.
The concept would essentially be a GNC, except geared towards endurance athletes, yoga moms, and active seniors. The store layout would be way more calm and less intimidating than your typical GNC and wouldn’t be filled with a bunch of large tubs filled with concoctions with unpronounceable names (that always have an “X” somewhere in them) and ingredients. The focus would be more on single ingredient products like ashwagandha, magnesium, etc. I’d also like to focus on beverages like green teas. The store would have different sections—“Perform,” “Calm,” “Restore,” “Focus,” etc, each focusing on relevant supplements/ingredients. We’d try to be tied to the community and sponsor races, etc.
I know there’s many challenges, and I have a few questions:
1. Anyone know anything about this market? Regulatory issues? Margins? Supply chain issues?
2. People just buy this stuff online. True, but the online market/literature is confusing as hell. We’d be a place you come to get helpful, trustworthy advice (just like people can buy all their electronic stuff online but still go to Best Buy for advice and to actually touch the stuff).
3. Retail sucks. True. And I don’t have any experience in this space. I realize for the first 1-2 years I’d be holding down the fort from 8am to 8pm every day probably. The time factor (plus the stress of owning your own business in general) doesn’t escape me.
So why am I an idiot (or not) for thinking about this?
