I wonder what Jerry is thinking right now. He told Johnson to follow his one size fits all distance coaching and she would get faster.
Johnson said "that won't work for me." Jerry said "you have no idea what you're talking about" so Johnson quit and got a smarter coach. Now Johnson just kicked everyone's ass. Jerry must feel pretty stupid.
Will this convince Jerry to change his one size fits all approach? Probably not. He's too stubborn.

he's thinking I'll just get a few more collegians this year, and if they don't work out no biggie since some runners are bound to thrive out of the many that have come to Portland; Problem is he isn't getting the luxury of numbers anymore compared to the 2018-2019 era; You don't see new grads streaming to BTC, and his silence on having Shelby hanging around the team for a year sure isn't helping...

…or, she got a year of badly needed strength under her (super low mileage in college), and is reaping the benefits this year. Time will tell.
She's going to break Houlihan's record within a few years. She is insanely talented.
There's a big jump between 3:58 and 3:54. It's the difference between #16 all time and 75th all time.
Looking at the women who have broken 3:55 in history and they all have big 3k/5k upside or are you know, from those Chinese champs or Eastern European Cold War wonder.
Of the women who have done it recently you have Dibaba - sub 14:20 5000. Hassan - 14:20+29min 10k, Tseguy who has gone 14:13/29:30, Kipyegon who did 14:30 pre super spikes in a tactical duel with Dibaba and won 2 world cross titles, Houlihan* who went 14:23. The weakest would be Muir, but she still went 8:26 indoor 3000m, she hasn't really explored the 5000 but off that 3000 you'd expect at least sub 14:40.
The question is whether Johnson will keep pushing her aerobic abilities enough under PJ to give her the ability to sustain that extra pace. I think she had the tools to be pretty dominant in the American scene for the next two cycles, but breaking Houlihan's record will be tougher. I'd love to see it, but it's a steep task that will require Johnson to step out of her comfort zone.
Heck or I eat my words and she's a freak talent who breaks the mould this summer who knows.
What was with the (British? Aussie?) announcer on NBC asking the audience if St. Pierre or Schweitzer finished third? They weren’t exactly neck and neck. Do announcers on American TV just not pay attention to what’s going on?

My impression is that Johnson was unable to finish the strength workouts at BTC. I’m sure she benefited a bit from that type of work, but she has said in interviews (maybe her post race interview at Pre? I can’t remember exactly) that she is doing up to six miles of tempo/threshold work under Pete Julien. That’s not nothing and it’s more than she did at Ok State.

They have been doing aerobic work and they will continue. She ran 55 open 400 high school, so she needs speed training built into aerobic training blocks. BTC wasn't doing that.
Her last lap was 59.28 and it looked comfortable. I've never seen a smoother looking 59.2 second last lap. Her form never broke.

What’s sad is that, even if she breaks it or comes close, people will hop on the 2THEGILLS train instead of acknowledging the difference a coach can make.
