Coleman showed in the semis that he is well on his way toward peak shape. I hate these world's free passes. They come way, way after their win and so prove nothing, and they destroy the value of the U.S. champs affected by them. Kerley is looking supreme right now. I hate to see Yohan Blake back at that level as he was among the most obvious ever when he ran 9.69/19.26 TEN YEARS AGO.

I agree. I was thinking about this the other day. Before these wild cards, was there a high profile American or something that missed out on a WC? What was the impetus for the rule? I can't remember.
Like pretty much if you arent in shape at USAs, you are unlikely to do anything major at Worlds anyway.
Attendance is already horrible. Imagine in two years when Athing Mu, Erriyon Knighton, Sydney McLaughlin, Fred Kerley all have byes and skip out.
I think they should get rid of them. The byes reinforce the notion that is killing track and it's that only the outdoor champs matter. In the NCAA basketball see tournament, if #1 seed UVA goes out in round 1, so what. It's exciting.

Thats easy for you to say rojo. You've never been in their situation. When the risk of blowout is real, especially in the sprints, the safe move is to protect your earned bye.
I don’t think there should be byes but how about this? Give the country an extra spot that is not tied to one athlete. The 3-athlete rule stinks in situations like the USA for 200, Ethiopia for 5,000 etc. Having the fifth or sixth best athlete on the sidelines is dumb just because of what country they represent.
Kerley is already in 9.6x shape if he can start as poorly as he did in the final and still run 9.77. Combine his start from the semis with the last 70m from the finals and I think we’re looking at an all-time top-2 performer.
The 200m this weekend has the potential to be absolutely mind-blowing if Kerley carries this kind of form into it against Lyles and Knighton. Might see three sub-19.5s in the final!
It was the 1997 worlds, right after Atlanta, and a bunch of US stars were out. Michael Johnson got hurt in that silly 150m against Donovan Bailey. Dan O’Brien was out in the deca as well.
My memory of this was that IAAF created wild cards to solve the problem of “how do we let Michael Johnson into worlds? Let’s make something up.”
Respect to Noah Lyles for being the only track athlete with the bye to actually compete in the finals. Especially since he wasn't the favorite coming in.
