the mens' 800 this year has kinda been lacking
Hocker and Kerr will run faster this weekend
It is a good workout for Jakob. He likely trained right through it.
Slower than I expected, but fair to think he trained through it and he, self-proclaimed, doesn't have the leg speed for quality 800s. And besides, you can't be disappointed in people not being better.
Gets me thinking tho, what's the fastest 800 we've seen Jakob run to close out a 1500/mile? Have to imagine he's gone sub 1:50
When he runs 1:52s back-to-back next week at the Oslo DL, today will be forgotten.
Before the race he said it was a nice tuneup session for Bislett. Looked like he tried to surge after 400m, but was blocked by a guy going out in lane 2 without advancing. Still he didn't have much to give in the end. Slower than his PR...
It really doesn’t make much sense. He’s about 1 second faster than Sahlman in the 800m and nine in the mile.
Here is the full race:
Does anyone speak Norwegian. At the beginning, he gives an interview. I'd love to know what he says.
PS. There was a lengthy thread on the race where people talked about what they were expecting before the race. You can find that here:

I think you meant at the end? Small trivia, one of the norwegian guys commenting in that clip is Olympic gold medalist in the 800, Vebjørn Rodal. He regilarly comments on national tv. The other one is a 2:3x maratoner with a quite popular running podcast interviewing the Ingebrigtsens etc. Anyways at the end J says that the meet went more or less as expected. He feel his body is not made out for running at those speeds from the start, that he needs some laps to get into the groove. But the thought it was fun to race, and he really enjoyed to be able to be a part of that meet, and was happy that it fit his schedule this year. He also says it is a tune up for Bislett.
They have been editing the video after it was up as originally it opened with an interview of him.

This is a olympic champion in the 1500 training for worlds in the 1500 and 5000. This was below his PR from when he was a teenager. Go figure 😊

Let me check the broadcast, at least I translated the post race interview. I will come back with a pre race interview if there is one.

Well Moorcroft ran 1.46 just after his 13 min world record. I think most people would think Jakob would be at least as fast as that.
And Jakob will be a 12:45 5000m runner by the end of this summer, so ca. 15s faster than Moorcroft in 5000m. Endurance always comes at the cost of the speed and vice versa. Therefore it's absolutely plausible, that he simply is not faster than Moorcraft in 800m.
I would not be surprised if Cheptegai would struggle to break 1:50.
The whole Ingebrigtsen training shtick is scientifically optimized aerobic training using a lactate meter...
IE the training is... almost designed to make one as fast as possible at the 1500 without making them fast at 400/800. I can't see how this is a surprising result.
Real 800 runners are banging out sub-25 200s in practice weekly at this time of year. How often do you think Jakob is even hitting mile pace?

PRE RACE INTERVIEW:
What can we expect?
Hard to say, I am excited, I havent done much of that (800m racing) the last years. I will race as fast as I can, but I'm mostly here to get a tuneup for Bislett. The meet organizers wanted me here, and I enjoy getting to race in Norway, so here we are.
Are you a favorite today?
Not at all.
Will you aim for a record?
You always hope for a new record, however it is a different time in the season than last time (when setting the record), but I hope to run my record give or take.

Hmm Jakob looked pretty sluggish throughout. I guess he really does have very minimal speed.
Also was the pacer wearing vaporflys??

How quickly can an athlete transition from max endurance to max speed for their potential? Is this a 3-6 month process, or years in the making, or at some point irreversible? I’m not sure if Jakob is the best example, but how long would it take him to break 1:45? If he manages it, then it would be impossible for him to contemporaneously break 13? How on earth does Hassan manage to run low 3:50s and 29 minutes in the same season? Could she have also run 1:57?
Pretty much what I expected, considering his PR is 1:46. 1500 runners have a really hard time with the positive split nature of the 800 which is normal for sprint types. They can close a 1500 fast, but going out fast and slowing down is very unfamiliar for them.
Nice run from Joe Deng after missing nearly 2 years. Looks close to getting back into PB shape. A couple of years ago he and Pete Bol used to trade wins on the Aussie circuit
