Beautiful race by Engelhardt. After being chased down multiple times by Frias in past races she laid off the gas some and actually MOVED OVER and let Frias lead then made her move in the last 200 and had enough to keep Frias or McDonnell from kicking her down. Check mate. Knew the kid was fast but now shes breaking top seniors with tactics.
And Mia Chavez 4:41.71, with eight under 4:50. The boys' race was disappointing. Went out in 2:08. Chris Caudillo won at 4:10.72. He'll be back in the 3200.

Mia Chavez was the biggest surprise. I couldn't believe she hung with the big 3 for three and a half laps.
Interesting to see what Chavez and Engelhardt have left for the 800 final.

It's kind of odd that the state champ in the 1600 will have only the 3rd fastest time by a California boy today, after Colin Sahlman at Pre this afternoon and Lex Young coming up later this evening at RunningLane.

Actually, fifth best time in California this year. Colin Sahlman's time today, then Leo Young at Azusa Pacific at 4:00.77, Lex at 4:04.68. Caudillo was just behind Lex at 4:05.32, but Aaron Sahlman had run 4:05.00 at the Sundown #1 meet in February.

I said it will be the third fastest time TODAY, not this year.
How often does a state champ not have the fastest time in the state on the SAME DAY they win the state championship?.
The wind is very strong right now. All of those guys who beat him could’ve cracked 1:50 on a good day and under good conditions. Hard to spin this as a good result for him though, but he’ll be back next year.
What a girl's 3200! Nordenholz ran one gutsy race but was run down by the freshman. McDonnell 3rd.
Gutsy? Yes. Smart? No.
Why would you volunteer to break the wind for the entire race for the other top runners? If Nordenholz had tucked in behind a few other runners for most of the race, she might have won.

Maybe, but with the wind it's likely no one would want to lead and there would still be a big pack with a few laps to go, giving the advantage to the fast finishers like McDonnell. She almost pulled it off by completely blowing the pack apart early. At the end only one runner could hang with her - one that had beaten her already this year.
