Making slow, but steady progress. Looking at this season with its ups and downs, it will be a positive year of learning and development if one of the following two things happen:
1. Makes USA Final 2. PBs after Trials
I think both are highly realistic. It's probably not going to be the big jump to making the team that the biggest believers had, but there's adjustment in the first year of pro running and the USA team may require being in 3:33-flat shape AND being tactically on point. Not easy.
I think the MF was sarcastic. I don't think he has a prayer to make the team or even finish in the top 6. But sometimes you take a step back before you move forward again. I think he'll eventually be a super stud, 3:33 or better, or maybe truly great. He still has lots of time and I think he and those around them are patient. The goal, IMO, should be working toward '23 and '24 U.S. teams and, especially, '27 and '28 teams.

Do you think it's going to be that competitive? After Teare and Hocker, it looks pretty open. Anyone with the standard who has a good day looks like they could get that third spot. Kessler has found 2.5 seconds in a few weeks, that should out him in the frame
As a prep the only ones who merit consideration with him in the very highest echelon are Ryun and Webb. No one else belongs. Imagine being a professional coach and being given one of the three to train and maximize their potential in their next 10 years.

Agreed. Centro is done for the year, Nuguese is injured, Engels is MIA. Nobody else outside of Hocker/Teare is jumping out at me. Another month of training and I wouldnt be surprised if Kessler is in 3:34 shape and is the best of the rest.
Calm down, he didn’t PR or hit the standard. Not a MF worthy post.
Yeah I know that but I’m really proud of him and that’s a huge step in the right direction considering he was beaten by Ben Flanagan in a 3:46 race a few weeks ago, and most people were writing him off. If he doesn’t make the team or doesn’t run the standard, he can still go to world u20, and he would be a strong contender for a medal, that’s still a big achievement.
This is how unrealistic people are ....Kessler is 19 and two months..he just ran the THIRD fastest U20 U.S. mark of ALL TIME, and that is probably not good enough for all the distance mavens on here. THis is not an infrequently run event , you know.
THIRD..he now has 2 of the top three, go look at that list. I am not sure what people want, its insane, that and the fact they have no idea how a progression can work..It took Webb three years plus to run a mile faster than his HS "One off" because thats what that was. It took 3-4 to get to 3:32.73.

I do. I think I’ve made a good assessment because King999 is saying asking him to make a US final is too much and you’re saying not enough. Ciattei, Alexander, Engels, Prakel, Nuguse, Beadlescomb, Wynne, Thompson - one of these guys will get to 3:33mid or high type shape. I’m not saying it’s impossible for Kessler but Ciattei was well clear of him and he’s not first in that pecking order of guys.
He ran A TIME, that is what he was one day. He was much more like a 3:37-8 guy who caught it once. Its hard to get back to that no matter what anyone on here thinks. I think making a U.S. Final at where he is in his development, would be a really good result. There are a lot of guys who are way older, and doing this for a while, that are running solidly now.

Nuguse seems most likely but he hasn't been fit all year. There was one US guy who went sub-34 last year, I can't see three doing it this year. Kessler also seems to have a higher ceiling than everyone else. There's still plenty of chances for everyone, I guess we'll see how Thier fitness develops

Not true. Engels, Hocker, Alexander, and Centro all went sub 3:34 last year.

The blowhards on this board, most of whom would piss down their leg at the start line of a major race, don’t know sh!t from shinola. Hobbs is a major talent with an excellent coach. And he’s 19.
