3:39.56 converts to 3:57.16 mile by 1.08x. About a second better than indoors.
Splits of 44/59.3/1:00.2/55.93. The close is very impressive and indicates that he can run a couple seconds faster.
Yes, Pre should string out better for him. Like most high schoolers, the best race for them to go fast is where they can sit in the back and run a slight negative split without having to go over their head. This one was too bunched at the front and if Pre goes out as expected in 1:53 or so, he should be able to run 1:57-8 in last and run really quick.
I don’t get the Hobbs hate popping up. Hobbs was spectacular because he trained part time most of HS, was focused on rock climbing, and suddenly popped fast times last year. By all accounts Sahlman is training in a world class program with other elite talents his age. I don’t care that Hobbs has Mason Ferlic running 30 meters ahead of him in every workout and Nick Willis doing half the reps with him, Hobbs is an alien talent and celebrating his injury like it’s some big victory that Sahlman could beat him now is insane. People on these boards are so addicted to fanboying HS talent they can’t fathom that Sahlman won’t infinitely improve every race and never get hurt while assuming Hobbs is washed up because he got hurt this spring and somehow running 3:34 as an undertrained youth doesn’t impress them anymore.
I think what happens with the Webbs, Hasays, Tuohys and Nbp's is that the hype build over a 2+ year period. Sr year wonders like Kessler and Cook don't have as much time to percolate with a window of excitement of only Dec til June.
I'm a big fan of Hobbs, especially last year that he did make a point to get times at 800 and 2miles and did run MI state meet. Now as a young pro, he slips off the radar a bit, as he's too quick for college, but not yet a lock as a top3 guy on us pro scene.
Next yr in hs it will be even more nbp, and Englehardt, Shea and Gorriaran have already built some hype as underclassmen.
"too quick for college" hasn't really been borne out yet. Even at his peak in the 1500 he'd have his hands full with Eliud Kipsang and Nuguse. Not to mention he likely has no 5000m ability to speak of. Seems like he would've been fine training with Nur and Young at NAU.
Aaron seemed to be working hard in his CIF qualifier to hold off another guy in 1:53.04. That is after his 1:53 in the DMR a few weeks ago. Hope he is OK.

I'm trying to check Finished Results but their website is messed up. The listing for the boys 800 is now omitted.
