Wow, I wonder what the record for most sub 4:10s in a HS race is? Gotta think this is up there.
Winner related to Derk?
Jacob Newnow son of Mark Newnow?
4:11.48 gets 15th!! EASILY the deepest prep mile ever, and only OR and WA kids!
I wonder if the Lakemans are Dirk Lakeman's kids?
Yes on both counts. Caleb and Aaron are Dirk’s kids and Jacob is Mark’s son.
For the younger folks, Dirk was part of the great South Eugene Axemen teams in the late 70’s and led the nation in the mile in ‘77 with 4:04.
Mark Nenow had a great career at Kentucky and ran 27:20 in the 10,000
In addition to the 15 guys from 4:04 to 4:11 (and Nenow at 4:15), there was an earlier 1500m race... it went 3:54-3:56-3:56-3:56-3:57... according to the MileSplit converter, 3:57 -> 4:16 for a full mile. All Oregon kids.
In the 3200m it went 8:55-8:55-8:56-8:57-8:58-9:00-9:02-9:03… Not hard to imagine that most of the kids in that group could run 4:15ish..
There's some depth in Oregon right now.

And don't forget that in 12th at 4:09.11 was Josiah Tostenson of Crater H.S., setting the national class record for freshmen.
And the girls didn't disappoint- Chloe Foerster won the mile in 4:43.81 with six under 4:50.
And last but not least Kate Peters junior from Lake Oswego h.s. ran 1:13.22 to win the Eugene half marathon. She's coached by Steve Edwards, husband of Shalane Flanagan.

Man that 1:13 by Peters is HUGE, especially when you consider her unique running form which is a lumbering, almost lunging stride that looks anything but efficient for long distances. It is also intrinsically much better than her shorter distance PRs.
are they all jesuits?

Oregon is easily the deepest state in the country right now for distance running. Change my mind.
