Yes, of course he should be. But there are still hardcore doping apologists such as Rekrunner and ThoughtsLeader who will post walls of text explaining why being caught doping with EPO when you are running medicore times does not mean you weren't clean as a whistle when you were threatening to break El G's WR.
I just rewatched the race and he finished 3rd.
Stupid statue of limitations...
Yes he should. I'm with Flanagan here: dopers should lose all their accolades, wins, medals, records, prize money etc.
But, that is not in the rules, so Kiprop will keep his "win".
We should think like the Brojos . What about Kiprop’s feelings, the humanity , his coach that believes in him , and the broken testing system. Kiprop should retain everything and train with his old team.
The original silver medalist (whose name doesn't even deserve mention), was already stripped of his medal for doping. Willis was upgraded to second and awarded rightfully second place.
IMO he deserves the gold, but 14 years is a long tome to go back a correct sports history. In the same vein Frank Shorter probably deserves the Gold for the 1976 marathon.
Waldemar Cierpinski has openly admitted to doping. He should be stripped of everything he has ever won. Mind blowing he still has his medals.
Kiprop beat a bunch of other dopers so I don’t see what the problem is. Why are we pretending that clean athletes make Olympic finals?
Marita Koch, Jarmila, Nadezhda should all have their time erased.
Nice effort troll.
Herb Elliott would likely have made every Olympic final in history, and pretty sure he wasn't doped.
Is that Shalane Flanagan that you're talking about? I look forward to her campaigning to have Houlihan's national records stricken from the books
Asbel Kiprop was just 18 years old in that final. No way he was doping and I’m glad he’s rightly recognised as the Olympic champion.
Yes indeed. Just like Kiprop, who wanted to send dopers to jail.
Rupp was doping when he was 6. What makes you think Kiprop was clean at 18?
Not according to the doping rules.
Do you have some of link or documentation for this?
If Willis had a better doping routine, maybe he would have a Gold medal.
Still, finishing third in two separate Olympic 1500m finals isn’t bad.
Ramzi will always have that memory of finishing first and standing on the top of the podium with the Gold medal draped around his neck.
Willis had the joy of finishing third and standing next to Ramzi and across from Kiprop on that same podium.
That experience of those three will never be changed by some ruling months and years later.

Exactly.
When I show my kids that race, they see the top 3 guys get medals, and no further editorializing is needed. Our sport is super simple to understand. Willis got 3rd. He beat all but three runners in the world to do it, so he should feel fantastic about that.
