Today in Seoul, 23-year-old Daniel do Nascimento of Brazil was third in 2:04:51 - breaking Ronaldo da Costa's longstanding South American record of 2:06:05 which had stood since it was the WR in 1998.
As recently as 2020, this guy was running 14:17 in 5000s and 8:51 in steeples and getting beat. Now he's a 2:04 marathoner? Now, his half-pb was misleading as last year after debuting in the full marathon in 2:09:06 (and DNFing the Olympics) he then ran 2:06:11 in Valencia.
Has there ever been a more unlikely 2:04 guy in history?
Ronaldo da Costa, former World Record Holder, ran 2:06:05 in Berlin, doing cartwheels at the finish line. He took 45-seconds off the WR that had lasted for 10 years.
Vanderlei de Lima won the Bronze Medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Marathon after being assaulted late in the race while leading. He was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal for Sporstmanship.

nice clickbait title and way to disparage this dude. at least you're consistent.
he went 2:09:06 in his debut may 23 2021, represented Brazil at the Olympics 11 weeks later and dnf'd just like 30% of the field did, then went 2:06:11 last december.
so he was previously 6 seconds away from breaking Costa's record in just the 2nd marathon he's finished. and now picks up a pr by 80 seconds.
just stop with your trashing already. or change the title to "23-year old Brazilian with pb of 2:06:11 runs 2:04:51..." but you won't do that, ofc since you like to use the board to spread negativity and incite drama.
Honestly we don't know if he had a coaching change or different training approach. More details about his training and approach to races are needed. Maybe he has a new coach and that makes a very significant difference (if you trust their training plan).

you're turning 50 next year. time to grow up.
He ran a 1432 in 2014 as a 16 year old and a 2913 as an 18 year old. Those are very solid times. The only funny part was the lack of progression in his early 20s. You sometimes see that with injuries.

I agree with you.
And if the guy would be a member of BTC we also wouldn't have such a title.
I don't see anything that disparaging to this guy in what Rojo wrote. Are you referring to the bit about being the most unlikely 2:04 guy in history? I'd take that as a compliment if it was directed at me.
Had the great chance to meet and train with Ronaldo da Costa who was training in Boulder in the summer of 1994. He was hammering out 60 second 400's pretty easily. This guy seems to have had a huge breakthrough and maybe he is a super responder to the special shoes. Hopefully nothing more than that.

Why the anger? I'm not trashing the guy. I'm highlighting his exploits. Please tell me where else in the English speaking world is this guy being talked about?
I got a text from a guy stunned by the performance. I looked up his pbs and was stunned as well. So I started the thread. I left out the 2:06 because if I start a thread entiteld, "2:06 marthoner runs 2:04" no one cares.
So the title it a tiny bit misleading but I always say part of my job is "making a boring sport interesting one day at a time." I could have just as well started basically the same thread when he ran 2:06. Would you not be angry if I started a thread entitled, "Guy with pbs of 4:17/29:13/64:27 runs 2:06?"
It's basically the same thread.
Please tell me when you've seen a 14:17 guy run 2:06?
As for the drug talk, what's wrong with that? If you don't think, "Maybe he's on drugs, yiou aren't being honest with reality."
My brother once lapped Ronaldo Da Costa in a 10,000. I then thought, "Wow was he on drugs?" But I also thought, "But if he was on drugs, why wouldn't he still be on them?"
