Look, the 100 is it. To sprinters it is everything. The 200 is ok, and suckaz run the 400.
Nobody in the world can name the 400 WR holder or especially the time, but everybody can name Bolt, and likely even 9.58
In the 2, Mennea was a big deal because he was white, and because Italy had big track and Olympic influence at the time. Ackbar was big because he had both the 2 and the 4, and because the OG was in the US. Even at that, his incurable inferiority complex had him try Bailey at 150m.
The 100 is everything to sprinters. 200m gold is a nice consolation to a 100m bronze or silver medalist. But these things have some historical currents as well, think about the 200m depth right now, or the 400m depth back in the day.
Every reql sprinter can tell you who won the 100m in Tokyo, but none can tell you who won the 400. Only 400 guys know that answer.
No value judgment, just a fact. The lower level of pain vs the 2 or the 4 means much greater participation, more fun, better quality.
