Hard to guess his ceiling at the 800m right now based on 47.07 because I don't know anything about his over-distance times (1500-mile). A 47 flat 400m runner can run under 1:43 or run over 1:50. He's run 1:48.8 to win indoors, so clearly he can run 1:47 outdoors when he peaks. 1:46 is a definite possibility. If he's 19, this isn't quite as remarkable, of course, because plenty of freshmen in college are running 1:47-48.
This might be one of those situations where his 400 pr is understated because he never ran it while in peak shape.
Like Lagat in the 800. He ran the 800 so many times in 1:46 so you might think that’s his limit. But he closed the Athens 1500 in 1:46 so…
Symmonds would never have broken 47, even breaking 48 might be stretching it. Have you seen his “Olympian races random people and their dogs” videos? He runs like he’s trying to make it to the nearest port-a-john.

He was close to peak form when he ran 47.45, as evidenced by his 1:42 shortly after. That said, it is certainly plausible that in an ideal race scenario Symmonds had sub 47 FAT speed.
No love for Cade Flatt’s 47.07? Guy races 800m tonight. Get him in a pro field later this season… 1:46? 1:45?
So what was his 800 time last night?
1:45 or 1:46? Let's not get ahead of ourselves. He's a huge talent but there is not reason to hurry him along. I'm looking for big things from him at Ole Miss. Is Smulders still at Ole Miss next year? If so, Flatt would be advised not to emulate him.
Taking a potshot at the CEO ? Not a good look. Cade Flatt is already similar to Wesfly CEO, Smulders might be looking to pass the reins down to him in a couple years.

It is impossible to run a 1:42 800 and not be capable of running a sub-48 400m. Symmonds split 47x several times in college when he was a 1:47x 800m; I assume when he was at his peak, in 1:42 shape, he would have to have been a solid low-47 and perhaps sub-47 capable
Symmonds raced a 47.45 400m three weeks before the Olympics where he ran 1.42.9.
He also ran 3.34 for 1500m. So yeah you can run sub 1.43 with 47 speed. But you need world class 1500m endurance and a perfect 800m scenario, like Nick had at 2012 Olympics, to do it.

Well, what do you think Steve Cram's 400 ability was?
Yeah you guys are noting the IAAF thing is an odd system. He is at youngest a late July birthday though based on his AAU competitions. So he is old for the grade. Brandon Miller was 1 year ahead of him in AAU comp, but is 2 grades ahead. Whatever it is, it’s an impressive performance and there’s probably 8-10 more weeks where he’ll be aiming to go even faster.
He posted tonight on IG and Twitter tonight that he was 18. In with you though. It was an impressive performance regardless. Dust at article says he would be #5 in NCAA right now. crazy!

I can only imagine running the first lap of an 800m within a second or 2 of your 400m PR knowing you have another lap to go.
