In high school I ran a 3 mile PR of 19:48 after splitting a 5:50 for the first mile. Not sure what my other splits were, but 19:48 for 3 miles is 6:36 pace. If I ran even splits the last two miles those would have been 6:59-7:00 pace.
Your average hs runner can’t break 5 so they certainly aren’t running 2:00 the first 800 and holding onto to 5:00 pace afterwards. That would indicate someone capable of 1:54-1:55 imo. Anyway the first time I broke 2:00 in hs I went 55-64, so massive positive split
I set my mile PR in my 2 mile PR. Went out in 4:50 to finish in 10:11.
Ran 4:59 my last 2k for a 5k PR.

In 2007 one of my boys was running the 3200. He got his first sub 11 and sub 5 in the same race. 4:59.xx / 5:59.xx for a 10:59
This is easier to do in the marathon when you haven’t done many. I did a 1:13:00/1:14:55 for a 2:27:55 PR at the time.

All the time my first three years of XC (8th through 10th grade). The annual PE mile was my only track experience until I joined the track team in 10th grade, so I’d even PR for the mile sometimes in the first mile of a 5k. As far as XC 5k’s went, I was an idiot and would just sprint out at the beginning and get passed by large numbers of people as I hung on for dear life in the second half. I didn’t know any better and my coach just let me do it so I’d learn how not to run. The last race of 10th grade I got that opening mile PR down to like 5:20 in a race I finished around 17:55, also a PR at the time. I eventually learned how to pace myself for better results!
When I was 14 or 15 I came through in 58 which was one second faster than my 400pb set a few months before
the second lap was 80 for a 2:18 (3 second pb) 😓
I moved my 800 PR up by 1 second going 52, 65 for 1:57. My best 400m split in a relay at the time was 50 flat.
A few weeks before that, I went 4:58, then 10:12 for the 1 and 2 mile mark of a 5k, then finished with a PR of 16:30ish. It was uncomfortable.

Looking back, I think my coach never taught us how to pace ourselves, so our team had guys that could have run wayyyy faster if they didn't run massive positive splits every race.
lol I set my 5k PR my freshman year on a muddy/rainy day. I split a 6:11 first mile, 14:something for my second, and held on for a 20 second PR in 21:23.
The same day, my friend ran a sub 5:30 for his first mile then died really hard sometime after that to run a PR of 19:4x. He also ran PRs of 2:04/4:56 his senior year, which makes me think he positive split his mile really hard.
I had a friend join XC to get in shape his junior year, and he went from not being able to run a mile to running a solid 6:10 PR. His first indoor track meet, he's trying to break 6. He went out hard with the gun and immediately was leading the pack. After coming through 200 in 29, he ran kept his position and kept pushing, coming through 400 in a blistering 59! At this point, one person is within 50m of him. At 600, that guy was about 10m ahead of him, and ended up winning in 4:59 (this was a heat where the top seed was 5:50). My teammate heroically held on for a PR, but not quite sub-6: 6:05. After a week of getting clowned on by the entire team for going out in 59, he ran 5:47 with a first 400 under 75, achieving his goal.
10k on the track in school record 32:20.
Split 15:45 / 16:35.
pack of 7 went out at 75s, 2nd group was running 80+/lap.
My 5k PR was 15:40, so came through split 5 seconds off 5k PR.
I was pretty bad in high school, but had two things going for me: 1) a weirdly accurate sense of pacing 2) a large body. I made a big jump forward in my fitness the summer going into my senior year, but was not expected to score for our XC team whereas a freshman with natural ability but no idea of how to pace himself was. So my coach basically sacrificed me the first race of the year and told me to rabbit the freshman through the mile in 5:30. The freshman just missed breaking 17. And me? I don't remember exact time, but it was under 19:30 which was technically a PR (though I was in much better shape than that at the time)
my 3000 in college... 4:13 first mile, about 4:33 second
I had three consecutive weeks of running exactly 4:36 in HS for the 1600. The splits were wildly different though.
week 1 (previous PR of 4:41) : 69-70-69-68
week 2: 72-70-72-62
week 3 (state meet in the slow heat, might as well throw caution to the wind): 63-67-69-77
That final race where I went 2:10/2:26 was a few 10ths faster than my PR, but I was certainly capable of running faster with better splits on that day. Because that was my final HS 1600, I didn’t get a chance to race it again for years, though I did run faster 1500 equivalents.
