Show Convos Over Cold Brew with Emma Abrahamson, Ep Mary Cain: Speaking Up for the Next Generation of Female Athletes & Transitioning to Triathlon - Mar 17, 2022
It's super insightful. I loved what she said about social media, and how agents and brands influence what runners post and how they present themselves. I am curious to know who the abusive agent she referenced was.
Well, obviously. Isn't that the whole reason that a company sponsors you, because they want you to represent that company in a way that reflects positively on that company?
A few weeks ago a bunch of professional female runners sponsored by Adidas all posted on Instagram on the same day about how much they love their Adidas sports bra. Do you think that was an accident?
Does Emma really get that much hate here? Just asking bc I found out & became a fan of her thru the letsrun mb. I am halfway thru this podcast & feel like they just should’ve called out Colleen Quigley as I’m pretty sure that’s the main runner they’re referring to

Do you think Lebron, Brady, Messi, Ronaldo, or any other a tual stars have sponsors control their social media? I mean, yea, they may be asked to post this or that but if any of them say no I'm sure they still keep the sponsors.

A professional runner doesn't have anywhere near the clout of LeBron or Messi. Not even close.
Runners need sponsors. Sponsors need superstars like Messi. It's the exact opposite.
guessing that Emma is the OP . I'm not listening to your podcast . I don't care about you or Cain.
Well yeah, every time a new user posts about some podcast "that made them wonder" about some prompt, that's what's happening. Would be nice if people could just be honest about the self-promotion, it's fine.
So Mary had an abusive agent and an abusive coach…
Then she tried to reunite with her abusive coach
Very unlucky
I’m sure she will have more luck with her triathlon career. unfortunately, she had problems in her most recent triathlon.
She had a bad swim BECAUSE others trampled her
She had a bad T1 BECAUSE someone stole her glasses
She had a bad bike BECAUSE she was not able to draft off others
She had a bad T2 BECAUSE she had to sit down
She had a bad run BECAUSE she had to walk due to leg issues she has as result of lingering injuries caused by her former coach I assume
She basically didn't train and half-assed the race because only old white men care about results or whatever
After listening to some of that I wonder if she has some anxiety or PTSD around training hard. She had time to prepare for this triathlon and learn the basics of cycling, she just decided not to.
This girl is delusional and completely undermines the people that were actually abused by Alberto. Alberto’s hands are clean with Cain. She should talk more about her parents’ utter failure parenting. I’m not going to listen to to this podcast so can someone explain what she said? Was the agent abusive because he told her she wasn’t worth the amount of money she wants?
Something about this post made me think about the time rojo referred to people rightfully angered about Shelby as "haters".
Rojo in case you ever read this: this messageboard is what haters on letsrun actually look like. Shelby is a drug cheat who disrespected the sport. Mary did nothing wrong, and some might argue made the sport better because she's advocating for safety and comments like these is what she's subjected to on your site.
FWIW I listened to the podcast. I think Mary is right to feel betrayed by the running community, and since she has lead this movement in the running world, she is within her rights to critique other runners and their approach to social media. I do have reservations about how she goes about doing it--I do think they all but called out Colleen Quigley, and made assumptions about Natalie Cook's 9:44...wasn't a fan of Mary saying "well I ran those times on 20 miles a week!" as if making an assumption that Cook is approaching things in an unhealthy way, because if she did research she actually would find out that Natalie does the same.
Mary cain is someone who is basically impossible to root for. She made her own problems by taking to wrong path and going pro too early. She flat out lacked the maturity to do so. She was a successful runner in high school and still an arrogant pain in the rear then. She and her parents showed a complete lack of wisdom in forgoing collegiate running. She may have lost out on a lot of money had she chosen college but with her upper middle class background would have survived just fine.
again, i wish i could root for her but i cant. Congratulations on what she accomplished now lets move on from mary cain.
I have to disagree somewhat. Cain's talent was undeniable. She won the junior world title. I agree with you entirely about the decision to forego running in college. Knowing what we know about how young female distance runners develop, that was a very bad choice. If their development is not handled correctly, it destroys any chance for longevity in the sport. And Nike was not a forgiving environment. Even the great sprinters run at least one year of college nowadays. But that is wisdom people discovered in retrospect. Now we know that turning pro in high school is a really risky choice. But how many people were critical of it when Cain did so?
