Pick up a copy of "The Immunity Code" by Joel Greene. Lots of great info on gut health, probiotics and prebiotics.. Quite different than any other book on gut health but is has helped me out and I'm 69yo.
Don't know if this will help you of course... I went very low carb. Still eat some potatoes, a little rice. I eat tons of vegetables and fish. Also a fair bit of red meat. My guts have never been better, and they used to be carp.
Add Kefir, sauerkraut, kimchee and a digestive enzyme and or probiotic to your diet.
Everyone’s different so should experiment to see what works.
For me, all of these things hurt guy tremondously. Digestive enzymes were the worst and made me feel the worst. Kimchi and sauerkraut hurt my gut as well.
I also avoid broccoli, cauliflower, beans, green peas as they’re hard on me.
Everything else, I’m good so I just usually eat like rice, chicken, eggs, carrots, peppers, onions, bagels, peanut butter often. Of course, I eat other food too, but just try to avoid food that are usually hard to digest. I also dont eat like steel cut oatmeal either.

Wow, that sucks, sorry to read this. Even kefir irritates your gut?
I bought kimchi and although I really liked it (in small amounts) it irritated my stomach too. It actually gave me stomach pain in the same spot, and when I stopped eating the kimchi the pain went away. It's a shame because I do think it can have good benefits. Unfortunately it can be quite harsh on your stomach lining too.

I’m not sure about kefir. My bad, I said all of the things you listed but glazed over kefir. I don’t know if I’ve ever tried it.
For me, it’s more of avoiding certain food than to try to take something that could help with my digestion.
With digestive enzymes, I had the worst stomach pain. I’m not sure what it was. Same with like probiotics. It’s like my gut becomes overactive and makes me super gassy.
so, I just avoid food that’s more difficult to digest. But honestly, it’s not that difficult to eat. I can eat most food. I just avoid like beans, brocolli, cauliflower, peas, steel cut oatmeal. I don’t drink milk, but I eat cheese and ice cream fine.

My wife can't handle kimchi or sauerkraut and complained last night about the salad I bought. Some probiotics are also too powerful for her as well and irritate her. However for me they are very helpful. Nevertheless it might be something for the OP to consider.

Before you try making serious changes elsewhere cut out all alcohol for a month and see if you improve at all. For me after 35ish any kind of regular booze causes gut issues for me. Sucks but is what it is.
Anybody have any anecdotal tips? I know in general more yogurt, etc is supposed to help.
If you're lactose intolerant like me, more yogurt might actually do more harm than good. The worst of my digestive issues were resolved after I cut out dairy completely

I second this. I had GI symptoms (bloating, gas, stomach pain during workouts, etc) for months before I considered reworking my diet. Almost as soon as I cut dairy out, my symptoms improved; a huge bowl of yogurt for breakfast every morning was counter productive. Gluten might be something to consider as well if you consume a lot of wheat products. I would try cutting wheat and dairy first, and if that doesn't improve your symptoms you could see try eliminating other foods, visiting a doctor to rule out a more serious issue, or purchasing an IgG food intolerance kit to complete at home (the science behind these may lack, but anecdotal reports, notably from Paula Radcliffe, are reassuring). Regardless of what you do, just remember that no matter of the health benefits of a given food, if you do not tolerate it well then it is not worth eating.
All other plant parts are loaded with toxins and indigestible fiber that play havoc on your gut. After decades of bloating and farting on plant-based, I am now eating meat, fish, fruit and dairy, and zero bloat and one little from toot each time I start a run. Also stopped with the multiple dashes to the toilet and loose stools.
I'm surprised with all the poop-themed threads lately that poop transplant hasn't been mentioned. You can replace your gut biome with someone's healthy gut bacteria. They can be risky though.
