So on Wed and Thursday nights, I'm in charge of the homepage so I spend a couple of hours surfing the Internet, checking my RSS reader, looking for stuff to put on the front page.
I just came across an article where the RSS Headline is:
'It's all about the medal count this year' - Kerr wants World Championships gold BBC 13:21
And the article talks all about it's all about being in the conversation for World gold, but doesn't mention once that World indoor gold will be handed out in 2 weeks and Kerr is skipping the meet. If it's about the medal count - did he meant say medal color? - then shouldn't he be at World Indoors as the only way he's going to get more than 1 medal this year is he he goes there. Memo to everyone - coaches, fans and reporters - world gold will be handed out at World Indoors.
We've been talking about this a lot on the podcast in recent weeks but we need to figure out a way to make World Indoors the 2nd most important meet of the year. Talk to the coaches, shoe execs, etc. Maybe move it up 3-4 weeks.
The #1 reason why track struggles for popularity is most meets are the equivalent of pre-season practice or a friendly. I get it World outdoors is the biggie. That's our Wimbledon. But it would be better if we had more than 1 major a year. Tennis and golf have 4. And sure you'd rather win the Masters than the PGA but the PGA still means something.
For an American, the majors could be World Indoors, USAs, Worlds, DL finale.
Please don't take this as an insult of Kerr. Plenty of other people are blowing off the meet as well. This quote was just too good to pass up.
Kerr is a monster talent and I was stunned a bigger name didn't scoop him out out of HS. I'm glad a world-class talent like Kerr has gone to a less well known group like the Beasts and thrived.
