Her time is like a minute 40 behind the WR. Why are we getting excited about it? Are we celebrating a guy running 14:20? Abby S runs a 22:09 (no. 2 ALL TIME) and we are instead celebrating a performance which is maybe the 23,000th of all time?

If you want to know why it is a hot topic look up Mary Cain and a host of other female high school running phenoms. This has been a hot topic for years. Even the NY Times thought so and devoted an entire article to the topic.
As to distance running WRs, as with cycling distance running on the international pro level is kind of a sad joke, although still at times an interesting one. Just like we still watch the Tour de France. We momentary suspend disbelief. But in the back of our minds we know exactly what we are watching. If the distinctive stench does not bother you, then enjoy it.
I concur. It is a G League time. Gidey better.
People get excited when a high school superstar has a top performance. Tuohy hadn't run since December. If Hobbs Kessler was in the NCAA and won the Big 12 title or whatever after a 3-month absence with a 3:59 mile, people would post about it on here as well.
Touchy set some high school records and then started off strong in college before getting injured. People are happy she's recovered and running strongly again. Also, a lot of female HS phenoms have burned out as of late and this too draws people's attention.
Also some people like college athletics. Millions tune in and billions are wagered on NCAA basketball even though the majority of the players in the tournament will ever play professionally. Without few exceptions the quality of individual performances pale in comparison to what an average NBA starter would produce. College hockey is played at even lower level relative to the NHL than college basketball and the NBA and yet it too draws millions of fans.
By your logic why would anyone care about high school or college sports if they aren't going to produce anything close to a world record or a world class caliber performance for team sports?
Tuohy. Good old autocorrect
The real answer is, as Ive said many times, America is the G League of running.
But a lot of people are ignorant of the vast difference in talent pools across disciplines. Not all champions are equal, just as not all medals are equal and not all records are equal. But many dont know any better and treat them all the same.
It's funny too because our sport is the one where you'd least expect this to happen seeing as to how it centers around objective metrics. This ignorance really is inexcusable.
OP knows the reason. There are a handful of middle aged men who became huge track fans because of Tuohy. They followed her into college and became NC State fans. They will follow her personal life after she retires in a few years. We would call them groupies if she was a singer.
Back in the East Germany days it was clean living and a rigid social system of Spartan-like athletic development creating a wider talent pool. At least you did not go with the alleged special genetic predisposition. LOLL.
Again enjoy it if it floats your boat. I'm laughing with you. :)
The same reason why we are interested in Mu's DNF, Syd's next hairstyle, Felix child's recent belch, Webb's high school coaching and Jordan's comeback - she's a star. Sure many better runners, but few stars in track.
Not sure about star but definitely a top-prospect.
Same as any other sport.. Fans of the sport follow prospects with the hopes they pan out. People do the same with prep basketball, baseball, etc.
Its is fulfilling to watch someone grow, improve and develop over time. People are following the Newbury Park team the same way.
A lot of the appeal of running as a hobby is the origin story phase where you continue to improve and set new PRs year after year. I think it's weird that people think it's weird!

No clue what youre saying.
Exactly.
It has been the case for a while. And for just as long, people have been predicting her downfall.

because shes america's favorite young runner in the track and field community .. that 5k was indeed just an average time but not all runners can close with 32s and she was an hs phenom, whatever she does, everyone will talk about it
what on earth are you even talking about
because shes katelyn tuohy
shes a high school phenom, the most popular hs distance runner of the decade.. and the greatest female high school distance runner of all time who has not burned out like all of the others before her and with her
after graduating high school and getting knee surgery, everyone here said that shes done and will not run faster times than her hs records, but here she is .. winning ncaa championships and developing a beastly kick, breaking records again .. she broke the US Junior 3k record last december with 8:54, a time that would place her 6th in the USATF Championships yesterday
Every runner burned out? That would mean that she would be the top American runner. You make no sense. There are dozens of American women faster than her.
Mclaughlin is more popular. Mu is more popular.
Assuming you’re NOT a 15 yr old boy…
Most men 30-50 yrs old have a job, possibly a family, maybe run some. Not sure what the hell is wrong with you dorks. Obsessing over 18 yr old females running? Who cares. Leave these kids alone. Do you talk to your wife, who most likely hates you, about 18 yr old female runners? Get a life. No wonder most women think old guys are perverts. Get a hobby or something. So who is the #1 basketball or baseball team in the country? Oh you only care about the girls…..go ahead and explain that you’re “coaches” are just followers of the sport. Creepers….
