Ayad Lamdassem: Salient points:
Born in Sidi Ifni (Morocco). He moved to Spain when he decided to stay there during a marathon competition for university games in Santiago de Compostela approximately 20 years ago. He became a Spanish citizen in 2007. He always likes to keep a low profile and he does not talk much. He made his marathon debut in 2012 in Japan, Otsu, with 2:14:39. After that there was an eight year hiatus from major marathons.
His performance in the Olympic Games this past summer in Sapporo was absolutely phenomenal with him dicing with the leaders for most of the race and finishing a very creditable fifth overall. He was not even going to run in Sevilla as he was down to run a marathon in Japan in March but decided to run Sevilla when discussing the options with his coach.
He will not run in the world championships in Eugene next summer but instead he targets the European championships in Munich in August and he’s aiming to win the gold there. He is sponsored by the Bikila apparel and ASICS shoes. Lamdassem beat the time of Ben Daoud (2:06:35), another Spaniard with Moroccan origins.
