I thought the most impressive performance was from Leo - coming off of an injury, he just beat his brother who ran an 8:33 3200 equivalent a couple weeks ago. Colin Sahlman's definitely breaking the 2 mile HSR if he can get into a fast race.
The 4 × mile at New Balance nationals at the Armory next month will be very tasty. The h.s. record is 17:01. I expect the NP 4 to run at least between 16:20 and 16:30.
It is really hard to get 4 guys to time trial their PRs so I expect more like a 1635(bunch of 4:05-7 and a 415) but we are still talking about a crazy improvement. Even the much harder 4x1600 record should get crushed.
just absolute insanity for February. Can’t wait to see what these guys do later in spring
Great runs for all of them. And I believe its "Colin".
Actually, let's see what they do later in their careers. Looks like Nico is off to a decent start. But I'm not convinced of the validity of their talent until they do something later.
Oh is that harsh? isn't this the way we talk about prodigy girls? Yes? Okay. Moving right along.
I'm not convinced of national programs. I read Marc Bloom's book about FM and what I took from it, was "was I a national class runner and just didn't know it?" Year after year some school in suburban Syracuse churns out the best in the country. But not one of them has really had a decent career on the male or female side beyond high school. So many great athletes, and yet...
Maybe it's the result of hard training. Maybe its the result of something else. Many of the FM runners went to college and claimed things just "weren't the same" and they weren't as close as when they were back on magical FM. But if you read between the lines you start to discover that they actually had a lot of unhealthy practices there. Several of the girls suffered devastating injuries because they tripped and fell.......... the boys didn't fare much better either.
There's a fine balance between celebrating the accomplishments of a national class program and questioning whether or not it's natural to achieve this many star athletes at one school. NP might make more sense as three of the boys come from one family. But I'm hesitant to jump up and down when I see stuff like this.

The Colin said in post race interview they ran a workout of 3x 1600 4:19,4:16,4:16.
Plus a bunch of you thing Lil S is a weak link. He just ran 4:05 mile by himself.

If just 2 families lived somewhere other than NB, no one would be calling it a national class program.
Isn’t their training somewhere around 60-70 mpw? Is so, they’ll be fine in college.

But isn't it always the case with young athletes to see where they'll be later on. Some will develop some won't. Part of the development is staying relatively injury free. So far the eldest Young brother, Nico, has had a nice college career, and we'll see how it goes from here. Also, with regard to FM the vast majority of their runners were very good but not necessarily the best individuals in the nation. Colin Sahlman has already broken 4 minutes in the mile, run 8:33 & change in the 3200 and low 14s in the 5K XC. Even arguing that the Running Lane course is short there's no arguing against his track times. FM never had an athlete that was as big a standout nationally. It doesn't ensure that Sahlman will be a standout collegiately (so many factors will determine that). I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Seems like an off race for lex? Truly incredible for a 8:43 to be an “off race” for the third man on the team, but after his race at the armory a couple weeks ago I would have though he would be closer
to sahlman and certainly under 8:40. Still great obviously. Also I wonder what Leo could have run if he was in the pro race with his brother
while they wouldn't be the best in the nation, they'd still be considered national class.
Aschbrenner, Appleford, Martinez, Doshi, Sam Macdonnel, Goldstein, etc are all just too much to ignore. Especially considering they all flourished over such a short time period, with Brosnan being quite a young coach.
I do see what you mean with much of the impressiveness of their top 4 being slightly misleading because half of their top 4 is practically a clone of the other half, but even if there was only one Young twin and one Sahlman brother they'd still be the best in the nation.
