LRC Note. We changed the title of the thread to make it factual and not emotional/racially charged. The title was initially "Sha'Carri Plays "The Race Card."
i had been so impressed by the way she owned what she did last summer. I thought it was stupid she had to miss the olympics because of it, but understand a rule is a rule, until it changes, and she seemed to understand that and take responsibility.
this kind of ruins that.
i won't get too bent out of shape about it. im sure she has a lot of people in her ear putting these ideas in her head.
Americans think that the world is against blacks. They should visit the middle East and Asia to see that some people don't like anyone who is different than them.
Countless black sprinters on steroids have been 'let off the hook' over the years...
As have countless white athletes in many sports.
This really isn't a race issue and Richardson is wrong. I'm not really sure why the skater was let off the hook. Both substances, cannabis and Trimetazidine, are on the list of banned substances so both athletes should be disqualified.
That said, Trimetazidine in your system is the bigger offense, and does more to enhance athletic performance than cannabis does. Having cannabis in your system should not have gotten Richardson disqualified but a rule is a rule and she broke the rule. It's clearly stated.
I'm more interested in how Richardson is going to do this season and if she is going to contend for a spot on team USA for the World Championships in Eugene. Her best bet is obviously in the 100 but she could also compete for a spot in the 200. It's looking like Gabby Thomas and Abby Steiner could be the strongest two USA 200 meter women at the current time but a trio with of those two plus Richardson would be pretty formidable. Others that should contend for a 200 spot are Anavia Battle, Tamara Clark, and Jenna Prandini though I believe Prandini's ultimate best distance will end up bing the 400.
Richardson is a hell of a talent and I wish her the best, but I wish that she would tone some of her rhetoric down. In reading her quotes about being treated unfairly, though, I don't think that she is becoming more humble.
Sha'Carri is as dumb as she looks. She's been acting a fool for the better part of a year, and now she plays the victim card? Had you carried yourself with maturity and professionalism your words might carry more weight, Sha'Carri. How does she explain why Gabby got a golden pass?

Spoken like a true bigot. "Black." is the first indicator, but asking people with societal challenges to accept their inequality because it's harder for other people who are "different" than people who live there? "Blacks" are different than people living in America? Holy hell.
It is a fair argument. The Russian should not be allowed to compete. Sha'carri wasn't for smoking cannabis. Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare was pulled and not allowed to run in the semis of the 100M at the Tokyo games. Now we are told that if the Russian places in the top 3, there will be no medal ceremony. So two other athletes will be punished for a drug taker. This is absolutely freaking ridiculous.
You two think this is well said? Some of you people do not fail to continue to disappoint. I am no fan of Ms. Richardson, but how is this not difference in treatment between her and the Russian or between the Russian and Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare who was barred from running the semis of the 100M at the Tokyo games? Why was not the same thing done and allowed Blessing to run and state that if she places in the top 3 there would be no medal ceremony?

Think about it a bit more, and really try to understand the basis for the decision. It is all there.
I'm not as in touch with current athletes asI once was. But I am trying to figure out how this young woman sprinter came To be so balyhooed--aside from the drug related business? Is her record of achievements so outstanding? Is it a case of great potential unrealized? Or just a scandal of the day media topic? 🙄
It's sad to me that everything in this country is by default assumed to be racist by many in the year 2022. The differences between Sha'Carri and the skater are vast.
1) Sha'Carri admits to have taken her prohibited substance. The Russian denies it.
2) Sha'Carri is a legal adult at 21- the Russian is 15.
3) ONe is a PED. One isn't.
Look, I argued all summer long that Sha'Carri should have been in the Olympics. Marijuana positives are supposed to be like a misdemeanor, not something that causes you to miss the Olympics but technically according to the rules, she should be out.
And here technically according to the rules the skater should be in the competition as a) She's a minor and B) too much time passed between her sample collection date and testing date.
WADA document page 105-6 says wrote:
Reporting Times Reporting of “A” Sample results should occur in ADAMS within twenty (20) days of receipt of the Sample. The reporting time required for specific occasions (e.g. for Major Events, see Annex B) may be substantially less than twenty (20) days. The reporting time may be altered by agreement between the Laboratory and the Testing Authority. The Testing Authority should be informed of any delay in the reporting of “A” Sample results.
Now. Personally, I think it's absurd that minors are given a protected status as now countries will have free reign to dope teens (so maybe we should have an age 18 minimum for the Olympics.
But both cases appear to have been handled exactly the same. The technicality of the rules hurt Sha'Carri and helped the skater.
I learned about the 20 day thing from Roger Pielke:
There is a lot that went wrong with the skater's whole situation from the sample not be processed in a timely manner to the age of the athlete involved. The WADA code makes a distinction there too.
It's worth noting that CAS did not rule on the merits of the case as it were. It did not say she is not guilty of a doping violation and could eventually lose any medal she wins. The IOC apparently thinks there is a strong chance she will which is a reason not to hold the medal ceremony. CAS has essentially said that not letting her compete before a resolution of the facts of the case would be detrimental. She can compete and if later found guilty her results can be purged, but if she were not allowed to compete and found not guilty then there is no way to have the competition again. It stinks, but there is some logic to the finding.
Also, the IOC and ISU are catching flak but they have to abide by the rules laid out and in this case have to abide by the arbitrators' ruling. Remember neither wanted her to be able to compete.
The drug the Russian figure skater took is most definitely a PED. In a sport that's all nerves, you can take a drug that prevents blood pressure spikes? Yup, that's a PED. Unless you are referring to marijuana and Sha'carri, because that's actually debatable, although still likely a PED as well.
I think the fact that Valieva is only 15 years old is a huge factor here too. She probably has no idea if she was taking anything or not. This is all about the Russians and Russia Olympic Committee, or whatever it is they get to go by in the Olympics. They need to be permanently kicked out. Only criteria for a Russian athlete to compete is to train 100% outside of Russia and represent the Olympic flag. That's it.
