Wanted to see if this was a common decrease in running specific fitness/running economy after not being able to run at all for 3 weeks. I had a lower hamstring tendon problem and could not run for 3 weeks. Prior to getting injured, I could run 20 miles long at 7:15 min/mile pace at a heart rate around 145-150 BPM.
Now 7:15 min/mile pace gets me at around 155-160 BPM and I've only ran for 4 miles at a time as I build back up. The first run back was hard, the second significantly easier than the first but I'm still not there yet in terms of perceived effort of 7:15 min/mile pace. My daily run before was 10 miles. I definitely don't feel like talking at that pace; whereas before I could.
I rode a road bike indoors on Zwift for 2 to 3 hours per day during the time off. Per week; this looked like this:
One 7x3 minute Vo2 interval day,
One 3x15 minutes threshold interval day
One 3 hour long ride in zone 3
The rest all easy zone 2 rides.
This goes to show us that while cross training might help maintain fitness; nothing will replace running. I wonder what would have happened if I used elliptical, aqua-jogging, or another cross-training activity instead of cycling.
