15 runners between 1:00:38 -1:00:59, 25 runners sub 1:01:20. It would be interesting to compare how deep this result would rate with elites in Kenya and Ethiopia?
They don't fare as well in major races outside of Japan or at world stage. I wondered about this. Suguru did well at last Olympics and the Citizen Runner at Boston but their track record is not that great. I wonder if it's time trial type of race they do well.
Wow. Yuki Kawauchi set a PB but only finished 66th. Crazy depth indeed!
Even more impressive that he PB'd given what we know about his training and the fact that he's 34 y/o. He's such a specimen. I didn't see his name in the English article - can you provide a link to where you saw this?

Their courses must be short, like Running Lane!
In seriousness, though, I should go to Japan for a half marathon if this is what it looks like...
On Tilastopaja, which may not be up to date anymore, there are 1,725 Kenyan performances under 1:01:30, and only 67 Japanese performances. The #1 Japanese performance at the time was 60:00, while there were 347 Kenyan performances under 60:00. There were 366 Ethiopian performances under 1:01:30, with 102 under 60:00. There were 32 Americans, with three under 60:00.
the top 9 guys were within 5 seconds of each other (looks like it came down to a sprint for the top 3)...how often are there two people within 5 seconds of each other at the end of a half marathon? crazy depth and mustve been a great race as well.

if you look at the list for the best under 20 male runners at 10,000 m in 2021 the Japanese have by far the best depth in the world. It definitely helps that they schedule a lot of 10,000 m races on the track in Japan throughout the year which other countries do not do but I’m still wondering if they have the best depth in the world at 10,000 m in this age group? It seems this might be the case.

Under 20 age group men in the world:
In 2021 Japan had 20 runners under 29 minutes in the 10,000 m and 110 runners under 30 minutes. Kenya had six runners under 29 minutes in the 10,000 m and seven runners under 30 minutes. Ethiopia had just one runner under 29 minutes in the 10,000 m and no other runner was able to beat 30 minutes from Ethiopia in 2021 in the under 20 age group. Japan wins. .
To put things into perspective, I’m guessing there are not many 10,000 m track races in Kenya or Ethiopia and both those countries are at altitude so obtaining good times in those events would be difficult. I still think that the depth in Japan is absolutely monster like in level.

Look at who is #61 on the list, easily the best known name of the group.
No, it's not monster depth in comparison to Kenya and Ethiopia. Kenya truly has monster depth. Any of those 347 sub 60 Kenyan guys could have romped at the 10000m over probably any Japanese runner in history. What Japan has is outstanding sub-elite depth for a developed country. For the purposes of this discussion, consider sub-elite to be 1:01-1:05. That's a fair measure, because 1:01 is 3 minutes and 30 seconds slower than the world record.

He listed it on his website results page and also posted about it on his Twitter account.
