Two former champions in the 1500m, Asbel Kiprop and Elijah Managoi, are set to return to competition following the end of their respective bans, Kiprop for EPO and Manangoi for whereabouts violations. Now begins the long journey back to the top.
Kiprop's fitness is questionable, and thus the former Olympic champ has decided to focus on the 800. This event may give him his best shot at qualifying for the AK team in April.
Kiprop had a tough time during his absence, falling to depression and then turning to drink as a coping mechanism, resulting in alcoholism. He believes he still has 5 kg to lose to regain his form. Given his lengthy list of accomplishments, it is surprising to see the '08 Olympic champ is still only 32!
Manangoi looks considerably better and has raced XC in recent weeks. He is only two years removed from a 3:29 1500m and is 4 years younger than Kiprop.
Both athletes are in the testing pool and have passed multiple tests in recent months.
Can either regain their former fitness? If so, they could shake things up at the top of the sport.
