I've heard this story actually! I always thought about that. You always hear about accomplished runners doing accomplished things. You never hear about slow ones doing accomplished things...then getting it found out as a sham, and being found guilty!

Moral of the story? Always be fast.

She dropped out of Stanford.

Every dropout carries an inferiority complex like this.

So Holmes couldn't be arsed to work hard (nobody loses if they simply attend practice) but made a performative show of great effort through adversity every Tuesday in front of the adults.

Wonder if this exact same story of grit and perseverance made it in to the plucky young trustfund baby's college admissions essays...

She had a girl named Elizabegth Holmes in her 4th grade class. Holmes was born in Washingotn, DC and my wife attended elementary school in DC. My wife was on a text message referring to Holmes so she's assuming it's the same person but wants to confirm it.

I'm sorry we don't have a copy of her 4th grade yearbook in our living room for nightly reading.

Just thought it was a reasonable first place to look. My parents still have my yearbooks and class photos and whatnot somewhere. I like getting to the bottom of things and am curious as well.

Maybe Elizabeth got last in all her races because she was running with the boys. Given her creepy deep voice, who knows what her gender situation was back then.

Looking at her knee valgus, it's not surprising she finished last.

I know very slow hs xc runners who became exceptionally accomplished. There's no clear relation. It's not as if our best runners typically become major figures outside running.

Last runner always gets the pity clap/cheer. Even negative attention is still attention.

It's pretty hard to be the last place runner on a "no cut" cross country team. We had one who came in a distant last. He could barely breathe and had no turnover and looked like he has choking to death the entire way. It would be hard to be as slow as that guy and it sure didn't seem like fun, but he kept showing up.
