I was around for it all, as I'm older (42) and was online in 1995. We had AOL Chatrooms to start with and through AOL you could create user profiles of your interests and people could message you through that. Then there was AOL/ICQ Instant Messenger which was more or less chat and less "profile". Then came the early version of Facebook which was college students only and then MySpace which took off quickly...and the rest you can fill in with Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Vine, etc.
As I've gotten older, I've dropped out of the Facebook world and haven't logged on in at least 6 months. I have Instagram but I'm bored with it. I've never used Twitter or TikTok. A discussion amongst my 30-something friends revealed that almost everyone is in the same boat as myself. We hardly post anything and will just use the web/apps to read news, check scores, etc. We are too busy to care or put effort into cultivating some online persona.
I've now noticed that 20-somethings are now sort of detaching from this stuff due to social media burnout in their youth. And I wonder, as I see people younger and younger get on social media and get burned out at a younger age, if there will be time where some of this stuff will become obsolete.
Facebook's Metaverse is coming along and older social tech platforms will eventually get phased out. I get the feeling that there will be a slow adoption of this "virtual" tech and it may pan out like it did in 1990's, where VR started but nobody really bought in because it was clunky, unappealing, and was more niche than anything.
My feeling is that it's going to be tough to pull EVERYONE into this virtual space and I do not see my peers joining in on this.
I guess I'm wondering what young people or 20-somethings feel about the direction of social media since they are the ones who spearhead these trends. Do you see this fading away?
