There's no way that MFer should beat you!
There was a coach who would always yell, “KICK NOW!!!” At a mile to go, half a mile to go, anywhere he was standing. Didn’t matter. It was time for his kids to kick now.
Before a cross country meet, a team was stretching and warming up in their sweat suits when the coach said "it's time to start jerking them off guys." He was talking about taking off the sweat suits, but the guys had trouble trying not to laugh.
I was at a small 10k OT qualifying event and a coach specifically yelled “Ed you’re going to have to run faster”.
It seemed ridiculous on the surface but in this context (the guy was trying g to qualify for the Trials) I guess it made sense. His sole purpose for being there was hit this time. Nothing else mattered.
“Taste it!!!”
Most memorable to me are those quotes uttered in times of adversity. Some that come directly to mind…
“Take off your jersey. You’re an embarrassment “
“I’m running right with you. This should piss you off. “
“You haven’t earned $5 of your scholarship.”
The 90s were a different time.

I love this
Way back in1979, Carey Pinkowski and I were leading a 1500m in Eugene. From the side of the track with 300m to go, a coach was yelling at his runner "use your 1:46 speed on those guys!" Splat...
My swim coach once said,”You’re just a bunch of TIDDIE BABIES!!!”
Today she’d probably get in trouble for that.
Maybe a better time? Coaches were in charge, not kids?
"I said sprint! I can run faster and I have an artificial hip!"
“I’m going to kill your dog!” Martin Smith
Mijn coach zei eens tegen me dat ik loop als een meisje, dat was nogal onbeleefd, maar het motiveerde me wel een beetje.
Last fall, a young assistant coach kept yelling, "Let's go ladies" as his runners went past. After, I heard one of the runners approach the coach and remind him that not everyone on the team identified as female and he should choose his words more carefully. I thought that was brave and reasonable, and the shocked young coach agreed.
In high school, one of the best local runners in my area, Bobby (can't remember last name), was running a 10k road race with his coach during the summer. His coach was a pretty fast runner, himself, and was running to try to pace Bobby to a fast time . With about a mile to go, I was slightly ahead of his coach who was in turn slightly ahead of Bobby. For the last mile, the coach kept surging and screaming "STICK WITH ME BOBBY! STICK WITH ME BOBBY! STICK WITH ME BOBBY!". It drove me freakin' nuts. Of course, I told my XC team all about this. Next XC season, which was only a few weeks later, when we raced Bobby's team, anytime one of my teammates came near Bobby or was on the sidelines when he went past, we would yell "STICK WITH ME BOBBY!". I'm pretty sure we got in the kid's head.
25 years later, I feel bad. Bobby actually wasn't such a bad guy, but his coach was a wacko.
"gotta love title IX" as the slowest walk-on girl finished her 5k at 26:xx
"You guys need a safety pin to close your vaginas"
"Did you eat paint chips as a kid?"
"Did you take 'stupid pills' this morning?"
Get that carrot out yer azz!
