Asahidotcom (with a translation from Brett Larner) has a great article on Takeyuki Nakayama, who was 4th at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. At Fukuoka in 1987, Takeyuki Nakayama went out in 61:55 when the world record was 2:07:12.
Nakayama explains why in the article. I'm going to make the following the QOD.
"In the marathon, you have to create the drama. When it's just the same old script it's boring as hell..If you run 3:00 per km you'll run 2:06:35. But there's nothing interesting about that. Sure, I knew that it was a suicidal pace, but I also knew that if I wasn't chasing my dreams nobody would feel it, nobody would be moved. If you're not moving people's hearts then nobody will remember you even if you win."
I think the WMM need to read this and take not. Having every race be rabbitted (and having every NY and Boston not be rabbited) is boring. Spice it up. I've long argued that the marathons should at least alternate years with and without rabbits. Make it like Comrades, with the up and down years. Winning is nice. But winning both up and down is even more prestigious. Winning a major is great, but defending with or without a rabbit is even better.
