We've all heard a lot about the awesome Newbury Park boys team, and some good individual performances, and the cancellation of NXN, blah blah blah... but I'm curious as to the overall state of HS Cross-Country as we reach the championship portion of this first "post-Covid" season. So please post your impressions / opinions of what's going on in your area.
Here in NY... the lost season of 2020 seems to have had a big impact on the depth of quality in teams and individuals across the state. There are a handful of top performers that are at the "state champion" level, but the number of individuals who will finish within a minute of the winner is way, way down. On a team basis, many of the historically strong programs have taken big steps back. On the boys side, Warwick and Arlington are complete non-factors, for example. The top three large-school teams head into the state meet with a combined total of 6 guys who have run better than a 170 speed-rating. This is unthinkably weak. For the girls, Saratoga is really outstanding, FM has two really good runners but only an "ok" 3-4-5... and there is very little behind them. I don't follow other states, but I would imagine that the whole NE is down for girls, since a very ordinary Bethlehem team won Eastern States in the absence of Saratoga and FM.
