Bekele is like 40 years old.
The dream is over.
I’m kalling Kibiwott Kandie FTW in 2:05, but no CR.
It will be interesting to watch Kandie's debut. I was burned too many times predicting Zersenay Tadese to win marathons to think that Kandie will be able to nail his debut. But the field is otherwise very weak. If anyone is going to beat Bekele, it will be Kandie.
I might tune in for the 18th mile on.
2:07 snoozer at best.
Abel Korir for the W in 2;08:35
Course record (2:05:06)? Possibly.
World record? Not a chnance.
Can he win? Absolutely...
There's a big difference between Bekele running for the WR, and Bekele running for the win. I see him running for the win, and his experience can only strengthen his chances against those with lesser or no previous marathon experience.
I don't know if Bekele will get the record, but I assume if the record falls, Bekele will play a significant roll in making that happen.
Bekele can and will win, yes.

With all due respect, I didn't post that he'd get the WR but maybe someone else did. I'm talking about getting a victory.

Olympic silver medallist?
I can't wait to see the trail of destruction Bekele leaves behind him on sunday. Kandie is going to lose his Kane.
We're only making plans, for Nigel. We only want what's best, for him. We're only making plans, for Nigel. Nigel just needs that helping hand.
Hope Bekele wins.

Me too! The weather won't be a factor but hopefully they get on pace after the bridge and keep it rolling.
Bekele has never really run a marathon just to win. I think he'd be close to undefeated if all he did was run championship-type marathons, like Boston, New York, Worlds and Olympics.
You never know with Bekele. On the right day in Berlin, he ran 2:01:41, but much of the time has not performed since he left the track. He could certainly handle the hills. Kandie would be the favorite if not for a bad knee this year. Who knows? This is not the kind of World Marathon Major course where you run 2:02-3. Bekele could well run 2:05 if healthy and motivated. Probably a better bet to take Kandie or the Olympic silver medalist. Given the best times other than Bekele, a handful of other guys could do it, as this course equalizes things out and gives slower flat runners a shot at the podium.
Can Bekele break the world record this weekend? No way. Not in NYC. Not at this age.
I could see him breaking the course record, though, if everything goes perfectly. I doubt he will, but it wouldn't shock me. A world record on the NYC course, would surprise me. A lot.
That 2:05 at NYC is the most under-rated marathon time in history.

Normies can't comprehend how 2:05 is a top 3 performance of all time. But if you know, you know.
I just hope he finishes and gets that finisher medal
At the press event today, Bekele told me he thought he had a couple of years in which he could still run faster.
His agent Jos Hermens told me he thought Bekele and Kipchoge both still wanted to lower the marathon WR.
I asked him about running fast and he said the focus was on a tacitcal race. Hermens agree - saying he told him to run 30k and race 12k but said 2:05:06 was certainly something he could do as it was 4 minutes off his pb (really more like 3:25).
I think it just depends on how slow they go out. I think Bekele is in fine form as is the Olympic silver medallist.
