“The current 6km women’s distance is too close to the 5km distance that women run in High School. With the time gap closing at longer distances, women are unquestionably ready for the 8km distance. Women are ready for a new challenge.”
I don’t hate the idea but I don’t really understand the argument here…
While you're at it, how about the women run the 110m hurdles instead of the 100m hurdles and move up all of the hurdle heights, steeple height and use the men's throwing implements.
Gee, why is a women's softball field smaller than a baseball field?....common sense. Makes for a more competitive contest for all involved., not just for some. Same reason the hurdle heights and throwing implements are different.
If the women want to run the 8k then great, but what does that have to do with the men's distance? Pathetic to decrease the men's distance. What good does that do for women?
8k standard distance for both genders would be a great change. 10k is too long for men to run all season and 6k is a horrible distance.
8k for women would be a game changer for many schools. I like it, though the altitude schools would have the major advantage.
But I think men's should stay at 10k... no reason to change it at all.
U.S. is a 100m to 800m nation plus jumps, hurdles and throws. U.S. is actually the best 400m & 400mH nation with a bit of decrease in success at 200m & 600m. The fall of at 800m is so severe partly because U.S. high school and college XC racing distances are too long which deter 800m runners from participating and those who do participate don't feel like they are part of the team, XC.
I recall Grete Waitz stating how unfair it was to have 1500m as the longest Olympic T&F event for women. Women have 3000mSC, 5000m & 10000m during outdoor T&F season at collegiate level. Is there a problem now? Are 400m & 800m women dominating fall XC? Grete W. could not win at 1500m but she felt she could win if there were longer distances. I would think the best women 5000m & 10000m runners win 6K XC races. Yes or no?
If U.S. had 3K high school XC, both genders. The best distance runners would still win 3K XC but 800m runners would feel more a part of the team and occasional 400m athletes would participate in XC. If college XC at all levels were 5K, 800m runners would feel like they are a members of the team. Five-thousand metres XC, both genders only can increase the likelihood of U.S. 800m medals without decreasing opportunities for U.S. 5000m & 10000m runners.
We want fewer high school and JUCO transfer 800m specialists demanding head XC and head T&F coach grant XC waiver. Has anyone asked female high school and JUCO 800m specialists their opinion of 8K XC versus 6K college XC?
Apparently this lady starts this petition every 6 years or so.

It does seem silly to set up two variations on a course to get the proper distance for each race.
Curious that they don’t suggest just matching the 10K championship distance. That’s been in place for a loooong time.
Women should run 8k; the 6k distance is too close to the HS 5k distance.
Absolutely ZERO reason to change the men from 10k

10k it too long???? Wtf is this beta doing on a running website?
You could make XC a 2k and 800 runners still wouldn’t like it. Get your beta self off this website please.
Women lack androgens to recover from the same training.
Suggesting shorter distances is a beta act? Get off web site? Leave all the decisions regarding 800m to Marathon in the hands of 5000m & 10000m runners? That would be foolish! Who told you 10K is manly? Don't women race 10000m in Olympics? There is nothing alpha about 10000m on track or 10K XC.
In regard to 2K. No the distances I suggested, 3K hs and 5K college are fine. Two-thousand metres wouldn't be fair. I was undefeated at junior high school 1 1/2 mile XC. I don't want to be greedy.
to the person saying "well we have different hurdle heights and throwing implement weights" - sure, but women run all the same flat running events as men in track, yet we still do this idiotic song and dance for XC? it doesn't make any sense. in my state the HS races used to be 5K for boys, 4K for girls. they switched to 5K for all a few years ago, to which i say kudos. NCAA needs to get on board.
While we are at it, can we get rid of the 5k, 4k, 3k xc races at the D1 level. There are actually 3k xc races, that is middle school stuff.
Why would anyone want this to happen? Do you realize how slow some girls are? The race would take forever. No need to prolong the race people already care less about (you can deny people care less about mens sports more but it’s just a fact)

The 4K at the World XC championships when they had it was awesome.
I wish the NCAA had a two-distance race format similar to that old worlds setup.
Coaches could divide up their squad based on shorter or longer guys, and they could choose to roll the dice and have someone run both (a la Bekele).
I have no problem with women running 6k.

This. ^^^. I think I love the idea of XC having a short race and a long race.
Hmm...you want equality huh? wrote:

+1
Make it ALL equal.
