Parker Stinson’s Sweat Elite videos proof he trains too hard

When I saw those last couple SweatElite videos (love the content he's putting out) with Stinson in his "taper," I saw impending doom for Boston. He'll tell you the splits Ritz wants him to hit, then immediately go out and do them harder. I trust that his coach is accounting for altitude when he sets the splits/workouts, it's just that Stinson can't follow instructions if there's a camera there.

100% this^. That's what I thought. Stinson runs like he's insecure and pushes way too hard to hit splits that look good rather than training at the correct effort and letting the splits be what they may. He'd be better off actually running a little slower than marathon pace but focusing on being relaxed and at ease at pace instead of going all out on the last mile.

If anyone was not a marathoner, it's Parker. Dude needs to move to Japan, become a citizen, and go for their 30K national title.

Stinson posted saying he's going to race more and get less wrapped up in workouts. I think this is the best thing for him.

The last week before a Marathon race should just be a recovery. week .What one hasn't done before race week isn't possible to make up for then.....

I'd agree. He may over-train because in his mind he thinks he's faster than he is. If he races more, he'll have real marks of current racing fitness to pace his workouts at. He'll stop training like a 2:08 guy when he only drops a 63:00 half marathon race or 29:15 10k road race. But then again he has his motto 'over train until it's not over training'. So maybe he'll just keep doing it. We need Ben True to call him out on it some more. Speaking of which, I'm looking forward to Ben True running a 2:10 or better on his debut on one of the tougher courses in the United States at New York.

Maybe this is totally unfounded but I always wonder if Dathan will pan out to be a good coach. I'm under the impression that he ran himself into the ground and even after multiple injuries and "knowing better" he'd still go out and hammer sessions to the point that he'd reinjure himself. Seems like Parker is cut from the same cloth and falls victim to the same tendencies.

His market is gimmicky stuff in social media. He's not going to earn contracts for Olympic medalists or win WMMs without turning to the dark side.

He ought to focus on this instead of the tweaks for a world class marathon.

In the video Parker says Dathan called him that morning and told him to not go too hard the tempo so maybe Dathan has learned.

I don’t know anything about Parker or his training, just this video. I would guess he goes too fast too often. He should slow his paces down and do more mileage. It’s a very common issue amongst distance runners at all levels. “Look at these great workouts I’ve done,” then they bomb their goal competition.

It’s more exciting doing fast workouts but the real work is the big mileage and there are no shortcuts.

Actually...Watched the video and this effort isn't as fast as it appears on paper. He's running a 3.5mi square near the resevoir. Two legs are uphill two down. He runs 1 lap and then the last two miles are almost entirely on the downhill legs.

For reference look up monarch mile on strava, -60ft and normally 10-15sec difference up vs down

Regardless of the pace, he seemed to be working pretty hard for a race-week tempo.
