Courtney is an American treasure , with BTC backing , gold is the only outcome .
2 Silver medals and she is "on the cusp" of being a great runner?
Helllllooooo.
I mean, honestly, show some respect. Go take your 62nd place at states and your 9:5x 3200pr or whatever sh|tty credentials you have, and go pound sand.
I can't see gold for Frerichs. Too many things would have to go wrong for the field. The two athletes who just beat hear -- Chemutai and Jeruto -- are both superior athletes with considerably more late closing speed. Frerichs would need a huge lead to sustain for the win.
Jeruto missed Toyko. Chepkoech in 2017 worlds forgot the first water jump then fell later. Those two situations enabled the Americans higher placement than otherwise logical. Coburn did a good job to earn silver -- albeit well back -- in full field 2019 worlds.
Underachieving event. I don't think it will remain that way through Paris. Other women's events are experiencing time drops as top athletes emerge and push from the front. No reason steeplechase should be immune. Heck, we already saw it when Chepkoech was in her prime in 2018 and 2019. That's the way the event should be run, not at 9:05 pace with 6 athletes running in a bunch lap after lap waiting to see which ones don't fall apart.
Your examples work both ways. Who would have bet on US Gold/Silver 2017? Stuff happens in the steeplechase and it is also injury prone, so an opportunity could open.
They are running faster, but I doubt there is going to be a drop to many sub 9:00 marks in the next 2-3 years. Frerichs improved 3 secs. since her time of 2018 (before supershoes), which is moderate compared to what happened for some athletes in the 5k... Jeruto had been very strong for several years (and of course, Kazakh Kenyans are almost as suspicious as Bahraini Ethiopians). I can see another handful of athletes (Yavi, Chemutai, Abebe...) who had been running 9:00-03 getting to 8:55 in paced races but they will not run these times en masse in championship races. Cf. Yavi and others in Tokyo. With the poor barrier technique of most Africans one needs to run 8:30 or faster to get below 9. Despite supershoes this is still quite fast
Frerichs is the real deal. Top US steeplechaser. Has the brighter future of all.
Much better than others that only live for the glam, and a much nicer person too.

Cusp? She's already there.
4th fastest All-time.
Yes but about 1/2 of the people on this site aren't ready to even recognize her as the best American. I am referring to real greatness. Olympic Gold and scaring the world record. These things are in her future.

She is in the form of her life. But I understand that some want her to be a contender and all that.
