New WR incoming?
New WR incoming?
Possibly, for the number of races he’s dropped out of.
The thread title should read "Bekele on list for Berlin Marathon, who knows if he'll actually even start or finish"
I want him to do well, but at this point, we honestly don't know what we are getting.

I don't care until I see him on the starting line.
I’d cut off my pinky toe to see him battle it out with Kipchoge one last time but he seems to be avoiding that in particular.
Where is the official news?
Paycheck only. Those pizza buffets add up.

Great news!! :)
Good news !
Who's left to run with him though with the stellar startlist in London, Kipserem, Adola, Tola ?
Geremew, Cherono, Desisa, etc. There's enough sub-2:04 runners these days to fill multiple WMMs

when it was announced that he wasn't on Olympic team, Jos Herman said he was training in Netherlands again so that's a positive if it's anything like last time he did that
He looks thin,, which is a good sign, but at the ripe old age of 39, I wouldn't expect anything.

i'm also a little cynical given the number of DNFs and DNSs. It seems that he doesn't do continuous training, and when he goes back into it he just gets injured and then pulls out of his scheduled races. would love to see him do it again, but not holding my breath

I was too but I do think he realized before his prior Berlin that he needed to change and did so when he went to Netherlands and had proper diet/physio/training rather than the years before when he tried to do that all on his own on top of trying to run his own business which was a recipe for disaster (or DNFs)

Yeah, I think he's past his prime. He was 37 when he ran 2:01:41, right? I just can't imagine him getting faster at this age. Hope he proves me wrong.
I would guess something like 2:04. That's probably the fastest a 39 year old has ever run, too.

Geremew is running London, try to keep up ! Desisa hasn't run 2:04:xx for nearly a decade and Cherono is probably tired from the Olympics as he didn't DNF unlike the guys who are running London.
Available 2:03 guys would be :
Getaneh MOLLA
Herpasa NEGASA
But what kind of shape are they run, they haven't done much/anything since their fantastic Dubai 2019 run.
Reuben KIPYEGO - 2;03:55 in Milan this year.
I have a hard time imagining Bekele doing a solo time trial for WR. His best performances in the marathon have been a result from chasing strong competitors. I think it's likely that the available competition has a big effect on his finishing time (if he's in shape). If the London field was in Berlin then a WR would be more likely.
But yeah not a good sign that his appearance is announced just a month before the event.. were they unsure until now whether he would be in any shape at all? Hopefully it's just an olympic year thing. Surely Hermens is thinking about Bekele's reputation and wouldn't send him to a certain DNF? But of course it's business too and the appearance fees matter in another covid year with limited opportunities.
This means Kipchoge will not run all the WMM events.
He'll either run Berlin to take on Kipchoge, or run nothing to avoid any comparison.
