Training partners in Kenya.

The dutch guy was behind the kenyan kicking for silver but signaling to the Belgium guy behind him.
Two guys from Somalia looking to take down the Kenyan.
They're training partners and close friends. Both of Somali origin
FRIENDS
Friends with benefits
Didn't get the memo that Belgians and Dutch hate each other.
Poor Kenyans getting a taste of their own medicine.
We looked and found their instagram accounts which has clips of the two training together.
Abdi Nageeye is a Dutchman, Bashir Abdi is a Belgian. They speak Somali or Dutch, as both are Somalian in origin and living in a Dutch-speaking country.
They are training partners and friends.
Classy move of the Dutchman, to think of his friend at such a moment.
Bashir Abdi (2:04:xx PR) was on outsider according to LetsRun, but I didn't expect him to medal.
I hoped for a top 10 spot.
He did that multiple times during the latter stages of the race. Abdi would start to drop back and Nageeye would emphatically wave for him to move back up behind him and stay connected.
Both trained by Gary Lough. Mo should have stuck with the marathon
By the way, Nageeye used to train with Kipchoges group for a few years before making the move to his new group. So he was quite literally sharing the stage with his friends!
Nageeye said post race that he felt good at 39K when Abdi was starting to struggle because of cramps. Nageeye could follow the moves of Cherono and thought about going himself at 800m from the finish, but then the Kenian would have gone with him and take the bronze instead of Abdi. Great teamwork, but also from the Kenians who understood early in the race that because of the chaos at the water / ice stations, you needed to run in front and help each other.
Aren’t they doorbell Mo’s training buddies in Ethiopia where Jama Aden “just reads the stopwatch” for them?
Maybe it was just hard to tell on the stream but it almost looked like he didn't care which medal he got. But I guess he had enough room & was telling Abdi to come through for Bronze. Pretty fun moment. He was also passing out towels & bottles to the people around him during the race. Seems like a good guy. Feel like I always watch him go for the Dutch record at the Amsterdam marathon every year.

I had the same thought while watching the race. It may have been a scenario akin to McGorty running the steeplechase instead of the 5k, where he figured if he couldn’t beat his own training partners he wouldn’t be competitive in the event. Of course, he probably wasn’t expecting his training mates to go 2-3 at the games.
McGorty could have done better than his 7th place at the Trials if he’d stuck with the 5k, and Farah would have had a good shot at top-8 in the Olympic marathon, which is better than watching from home.
