Hey guys (/gals),
So I've been doing some sprints/accelerations on certain sections of my local track. Sometimes, I'll do them down one of the straights, and other times I'll start like you would in a 200m and go for a certain distance around the turn.
I've been wanting to measure these segments to verify if I'm getting the distances correct. One of the segments I've been running for example I previously measured to be 20m (with a measuring tape, which I know is boneheaded but at the time I didn't know what else to do lol). Today, I measured that same segment again (with a measuring tape) several times and i got a measurement that was an inch or so below 20m.
Another instance was the 50 meter mark. Previously I had measured that mark and it came in as 50 meters, but today I measured it several times and it actually turned out to be a few inches below 50 meters.
I've become a bit frustrated as a result, and was wondering if a measuring wheel would give me an accurate measurement. I'm fully aware measuring with a measuring tape opens you to significant measurement error, but I'm still not confident in rounding these measurements to 20 or 50 meters (in the above examples).
TLDR:
Do measuring wheels give accurate measurements of a running track (both the straight and the turns)? Also, if the track has some minor bumps on the first lane, does that affect the accuracy of the measuring wheel? Thanks for any help guys
