I have recently got into running, and have been buying various clothing for runs just to help my performance. Having looked at running socks, I wondered if anyone could give advice on whether they are worth their while?

They won't make you faster but they are comfortable.
Don't wear black socks that end mid-calf.
No.

They don't need to be "running" specific but if you're running in cotton socks ditch them and get some merino/nylon/polyester socks, they are much better at preventing blisters and not getting saturated with moisture
Nice socks are absolutely worth it. Socks, in my opinion, are some of the most crucial pieces of clothes to spend a little more on. I don't have a lot of nice things, but I do have a lot of nice socks. My current favorite is the Swiftwick Pursuit Four. You can get them in any height, but the four is perfect for wearing with shorts, or winter tights, or my work boots, or whatever. I don't think it is 'running' specific, it's just a really nice wool, athletic sock.
Personally yes. There are so many different brands and even types with in those brands. Anything half marathon and under, I tend to wear thinner socks. I wear different socks for the road VS. trails. Longer trail runs or races marathon or 50k I will wear a thicker padded sock. Won't make you any faster as someone said, but the peace of mind your feet won't blister or feel uncomfortable if far worth it to invest.
I usually just wear my normal socks. I do have a couple pairs of running socks but don't notice any difference.
Walmart AND1 socks FTW! Super comfy and durable 95% polyester for like $0.80/pr.
If those don't work for some reason, then go spend $10/pr on something else.
Go to Ross or Gabes, you'll save 50-75% on the same stuff you'd buy at a running store.
Here ya go. Served up on a silver platter!

Balega hidden comfort. Thank me later.
Merino socks are nice, but they don't last.
Thanks for your help all. I decided to invest in a pair of Route40 socks in the end, look good quality, and also got 15% off my first pair when I used promo code 15SHARE. Will be back to review them and let you know what I think.
Are you a socktroll?
Now like a sock puppet.

8/10.
Well done, sir (or ma'am)!
Compression running socks are worth at least 1-2 sec a mile. I can always tell who's going to place in the park run by their socks.
Fully agree! I find them so comfy I just wear them for a good every day sock.
Easy days / jogs, doesn’t really matter to me.
For workout days , long runs & races : more important (especially if you’re wearing more aggressive/tighter race shoes). I really like having socks that are designed specifically for left & right feet so there’s not a bunch of extra fabric. I’ve got extra thin socks for my XC flats, a few engineered running socks for workouts and races, a bunch of cheap sport socks for day to day, and a few thicker wool blends for cold days (to avoid that “numbed” feet sensation).
Don’t expect a performance boost. They’ll help prevent blisters & wick moisture... this becomes increasingly important with higher mileage. I buy most of my shoes online, so I like having a variety of socks so that I can adjust the fit of my shoes.
