If you’ve seen some of Morgan’s YouTube videos, you’ll see he’s not at racing weight right now which is a conscious decision by his dietician. Once he drops those pounds he should be better than Fisher again.
Hunter will win the 5k at the trials.
Hot take
I still think out of these McDonald will be the one to come close to McSweyn-level performances.
I agree that Drew Hunter will lose 95% of the time to Fisher. McDonald and Fisher will have some epic battles.
Hunter is by far the worst runner of the 3.

This is my view as well. I really think Hunter's training is holding him back. Morgan is incredibly talented, and from what I've seen his training seems hard enough to get him in shape eventually, but we'll have to see. Grant obviously has the superior training environment, so I'd put him ahead of the others long term.
The BTC squad is hit or miss with longevity. You see a lot of people only last 2-3 years under Jerry’s system before they get hurt or start to fade.

I think there's not as much of a gap between McDonald and Fisher as people think. I believe Fisher has only run under 13:20 once, while McDonald has 3 or 4 times. Currently McDonald's best is 13:15 from 2017, but when you look through his results he hasn't had any races comparable to the TT where Fisher went 13:11. I think if these two raced, it would be incredibly close, but they would both beat Drew Hunter by a fair bit.
Is that in a three vs. two legged race?

In 2018/2019 McDonald outkicked Fisher 4 times to win a national championship by 1 second or less. A little has changed since then, but not much.

It honestly seems that Fisher's speed has improved and Morgan's has either stagnated or regressed just from looking at this meet....but it's way too early to say for certain.
I root for Fisher because I live in Michigan but hard to say who is better. Although Fisher beat him by 4 seconds yesterday the goal for both is championship racing. I hope the Olympics happen but the depth of US talent in the 5000m is deep. Probably 10 guys in the US if not more that could make the Olympic team in the 5000m

Yep. The trials 5k could be legendary.

Lopez his a hit. Fernandez, Bumbi, Solinsky, Hill, Derrick are sone of the misses that run well for a year or two then crater.
McDonald trains with no one and Hunter trains with a crew of guys that are worse than him. Fisher will destroy them because he is pushed routinely in practice. McDonald made a bad decision going to team Boss. Has Bosshard ever coached a male before that was any good? Hopefully he changes his mind soon because he has a very bright future in the right situation.

All three are great runners and add McGorty to the list. After yesterday’s race, Joe Klecker is also on the radar of younger talent to be recognized. Some of the older guys like Lopez, Chilemo, Jenkins are still very much at the top of their game.
McDonald seemed more physically mature in college then both Fisher and McGorty. What that means for potential going forward I am not sure but it is one minor gage to consider. Sure McDonald has run under 13:20 more times but he has had easier opportunity being Australian and making national teams which enabled him to compete in high level faster races. I would like to see McGorty run a 3k steeple. Seems he has the body for it, great training situation for that event as well. Hunter has had some setbacks but don’t count him out as he is also one of the very best young Americans. Instead of being overly critical we should cheer these guys on a lot more. I sure liked what I saw this weekend in Phoenix. It’s February and these fine young men and women put on a very entertaining display of their talent. Can’t imagine any of them were race sharp and probably are in heavy trading blocks so their performances are all the more something to cheer about. Joe Klecker ran a big PR and so did Fisher and McGorty. The pace was slowish at 4:10 for the first mile then ratcheted down considerably. Their 3k times indicate they are capable right now to make the very difficult 5k Olympic standard of 13:13.5 versus the previous standard of 13:25.
I wish our American team all the best in the dedicated efforts to being their best.
