For example, a 2:15 marathoner from 1995 might say he was a 2:12 marathoner due to not having the super shoes. I am not saying I agree with it but it will happen.

People do that all the time already... It's not even a shoe thing, it's an old person thing. Old heads are always trying to make comparisons like that, no matter the sport.
No

No, they don't say that. Show me where a 2:15 marathoner claims to be a 2:12. I'll check back on my death bed as you won't hear athletes saying that (Goucher doesn't count, she's an extreme opportunist trying to cash in).

You do NOT understand human nature. It has happened and it will happen.

Orrrrrr, a 2:15 marathoner from 2020 will claim that they ran 2:12 because the shoes, downhill course, and other modern advantages really had no effect what-so-ever.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't!
My PR for marathon is 2:4X:XX, but if I was training for it during my college year I was capable of running 2:3X:XX, and with today's shoe technology it would be around 2:2X:XX.
It already happens and doesn't have anything to do with shoes.
"I think that I would like to get into triathlons now that I am older and will never run a 16 minute 5k again."
(This is a quote from a friend who was 27 when he said this. He had already made a lot of progress toward being fat and bald. He ran D3 at a crap school, so I didn't even question the 16 minute bit. Later I found out that his PB was 16:59.)

Yes it already happens but it will provide the impetus for further embellishments. Of course you have to be a bit of a sad case to do this but even the best might be susceptible depending on their character.
Just spoke with a 2:18 guy from years ago who claims he is easily a modern 2:15 guy. He claims he could even be a super responder and call himself a 2:14 guy. Of course it is all meaningless.
"I ran 4:05 in the mile today, but with I think I could have easily run 3:58 if not for the wind, bad competition, my stomach ache, my foot hurting, my friend's gerbil dying a week ago."
People, including myself at times, always seem to distort the facts in their favor when it comes to racing times

That's just 100 percent projection on your part.
My 880 yard PR was either 1:56.8 or 1:57.2, depending on which of two stop-watches I believed.
So I split the difference and said it was 1:57 flat.
But for decades now the 800m has been the race so I lowered by PR to 1:56.5.
Way better than 1:57 flat.

Nonsense. You do not understand how some people think. I have met these people. Maybe you need to get out more.

Prove your premise.

See the Tim Hutchins thread. We are in agreement though that the notion of someone revising their personal best is absurd, desperate and pathetic.
