Dude went from 15:00 5k in March to running 28:40 in the 10k with a 57 sec close last night at a small meet in SC. Is this kid now a national ncaa contender? Thoughts?!

Absolute legend, you love to see that kind of progression.
Also a part of LRCs favorite little TC, wesfly
What is this kid's story?
It looks like he was class of 2015 in HS and only ran 432/940 guy . Then he want to Lamar? What did he do there if anything? Now he's at Southeast Louisiana and runs 28:40 when his 5000 pb is 15:00?
Guy literally was running 8:39 for 3000 last winter as his pb. Now he's winning a 10,000 in 28:40?
How is that even possible? An 28:40 means you are average an 8:36 for every 3k.
I would normally ask we sure it wasn't a lap short but there are 25 lap splits shown on the timing shit including a 57 last lap!! Could it be a different guy with the same name? AMAZING.

From wesfly’s Instagram it says he lost 40 pounds. Probably was a miler and decided to move up in distance.
He decided to boss up and join the alpha way of life ??♂️ Quit putting limits on himself and decided he was gonna be a force to reckon with

Excellent username.
40 lbs? He was short, so how could compete 40 lbs heavier?
Shea Foster Instagram says he ran 4:15 mile in Mar for track meet, probably just before his college track season cancelled.
The announcer said the guy had a breakthrough race of 14 flat for 5k not so long ago. For a guy running 4:15 in Mar with the season cancelled, 14 flat breakthrough is not as hard to believe. Sounds like he was ready to go 4:08 or faster later that spring in track. Maybe he is a good group to train with, and that helps explain his progression.
From 14 flat his time is not such a surprise, but I was still surprised, especially by the last lap.
Yo they’re not joking. This dude was an absolute beefcake benchpressing alpha male. Looks like he did just start running a bunch and shed a lot of weight. But 28:40 sheeeeesh. Is this the weight to do it? Get swol af and then cut it all off for some weight-loss boost???
And he beat out Willy Fink, isnt he like a sub 13:20 guy?? Check out the kid’s instagram
Ran 28:40 and instantly entered the transfer portal. That’s big ?energy
I run for SELU. Ran with Shea yesterday, actually. Here to clear the air on what happened and what’s been happening.
Shea ran in high school balancing basketball and track, both at high levels. Trained on the same team as Craig Novak but never really ran super mega fast because of basketball. Went to Lamar, broke his knee and quit the sport to powerlift. Long story short he joined our team and IMMEDIATELY we knew how talented he is. We have a 4 flat miler type as well that struggles with injury and our 3rd guy just went from 32:07 to 30:17 this weekend as well.
We will have a video on the YT channel “the hobby jogger experience” where Shea talks about his story and talk about all this and how it came together.
Look for that later today and wish him luck with his grad school recruitment! Shea is an incredible human being and I’m sure you’ll be seeing A LOT of him.
Lowkey this post was hella beta
SELU had 3 good performances over the weekend: Foster 28:40, O’Callaghan 14:16 & Cortez 30:17.
Watching the 10k, Foster should’ve pushed the pace with 3k left. They would’ve easily been sub 28:30.
They clearly have all cylinders firing as a training group/maybe a good up and coming young coach.
Whatever change they made this year it’s working and they’re primed to compete in the Southland Conference for the immediate future.
If was able to run 15:00 5km and 4:15 mile being 40 pounds heavier not surprised he was able to cut so much time off. He just put in the mileage and it paid off, good for him. Love hearing the underdog story, hope he goes to a program where he will be just as successful
Yeah, it's almost certainly their "up and coming young coach."
Ive known Shea ever since he was a tiny little freshman in HS, biggest heart and an even harder worker, not surprised at all to see him doing so well. Ran into some bad luck early on in college and never gave up no matter what came up. Proud of him and look forward to seeing even better times come his way.

It's worth pointing out that he graduated high school in 2015 and would be a 6th year senior this year. He ran a 15:27 in high school in 2014. Outdoor track was never as good as XC for him because he played basketball in the winter.
28:40 is very good, but clearly he was a really talented runner in high school. And his age helps. I would wait until their team places top 10 in the nation before we declare his coach the next Mark Wetmore.

4:32/9:30 is not "very good."
His transformation is amazing but now that I know the back story it makes some sense.
No clean runner goes from 15:00 to 28:40 in under a year unless a) there was a medical/nutrition issue b) they are a new runner c) they are coming back from some sort of injury.
I think he's a little bit of all 3 - a, b and c. Sounds like he was losing a lot of weight and given how much time he'd been out of the sport, he could either be considered a new runner or coming back from injury.
According to this site, he has two years of eligibility left and is looking at Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Portland and Washington as a grad transfer in Fall 2021.

The announcer for the meet added he was in the transfer portal.
He’s a super senior, and Covid only gave him an extra year so if he has more eligibility it has to be due to past medical hardships.
Whatever the case, he must be at the top of draft boards this recruiting season... any contender who can add a 28:40 guy is gonna be a lucky suitor indeed.

He can go to BYU and be one of the youngest guys on the team.
