For the 2nd straight year in December, Lord Coe has taken his time to talk to us extensively about his vision for the sport. Jonathan Gault has the highlights :
1) It's great the Coe reached out to the hard-core track media for the 2nd straight year. I very much enjoyed hearing his vision last year.
2) I'm from Texas but grew up in the city, but my dad spent a ton of time on a ranch as a kid. I can double-check with him but I'm pretty sure that when the horse bolts from the stable that they normally rush to put him or her back in. I've never heard of them rounding up all of the other horses and encouraging them to get out as well.
3) Of course, the legalization of these shoes means I'm much more likely to break 3:00 in the marathon and win my $500 bet with Jonathan. Plus it's great for us as a site as it gives us something to debate.
Coe is going in the wrong direction.
The shoes are ruining interest.
If running in shoes is (clearly) faster than running barefoot in grass, it is illegal.
Nike and other shoe companies are now Icarus and not Daedalus.
The 200m curve is boring, the 200m straightaway is more exciting.
The 3000m should be in the championships, including the Olympics.
The distance medley is being added to the 2023 world's and should be in the Olympics.
A sprint medley or 4 x 800m should also be added. Relays are exciting.
Cross country should be returned to the Olympics as in the days of Paavo Nurmi.
I'm sure there's a core audience that appreciates this sort of thing but I'll never care to pay attention to anything out of Coe's mouth ever again.
FINA and UCI cared more about the integrity of their sports than they did about short term publicity grabs and acted thusly. WA clearly looks at it the opposite way. And nothing could surprise me less.
What would he say if 800m and 1500m times dropped significantly and his name plummeted in the rankings?

After Little Lord HaHa Coe's shameless enabling of the doping cheaters Radcliffe and Farah, his opinions are less than worthless.
Disappointed with Coe. I guess once your records get broken it doesn’t matter how much further down the line we get with technology. It’s one thing for the sport to evolve “over time” but what he’s allowing to occur is a massive leap within a single generation of athletes and that’s a shame for those who follow the sport closely and with historical perspective.

This is the answer!
Well i never....
Seb Coe sponsored by Nike during his career and has links with them still, says the horse has bolted. We didn't have the data??
Nike posted the data, listening to his crap makes my blood boil.
Did the horse have some characteristics of a fish?
I love the little images on the picture!

Im a fan of Letsrun, not really of professional running anymore. Seb Coe has done absolutely nothing to help the sport.
I used actually enjoy watching races but the sport has become unwatchable. I cant think of single event over the past 5 years that was worth watching and now its completely ruined with the shoes. Joshua Cheptegei sets the 5&10k wr's and hes basically irrelevant in my mind. Zero rivalries. Zero meaning to any times. I cant think of single reason to watch the sport anymore
What would you like to see happen?
What if there were 'competition shoes' and everyone raced in them - they were standardised?
I mean I know that would never happen.
What if everyone had to race barefoot or in sandals (like the ones you make from tyres).
Translation. I was on Nikes payroll and didn't want to bite the hand that feeds me.

Just not allow carbon plated shoes in races? Pretty simple solution.
Also put together compelling track races that people actually want to watch. I can’t remember the last time there’s been a compelling marathon to watch either. The sport is full of a ton of boring athletes that provide no reason to watch. Why can’t there be rivalries like there were back in the day with Paul Tergat, Haille G, El Guerrouj, bekele, etc....
The Olympic 800m through 10k used to be exciting events because of the competition in the races. I literally couldn’t care less about Joshua Cheptegei’s career. There might be just as much talent in the sport now but I’d compare it to the MLB. The sport used to have stars that were fun to follow. Now who is there? Mookie Betts and Mike Trout? Complete drips. You couldn’t pay me to go to a game to watch them. Track and field/ road racing is completely devoid of any true rivalries which is made even worse by completely eliminating all interest in what times people are able to run
Sums up the position nicely, Seb whilst pocketing Nike's $millions was the one opening the stable door.
I wish they did that race where the last one every lap has to drop out...
Would you enjoy that? Think it would be a fan favourite!
Coe & co. were always trying to get t&f + road popular the easy or at least easier way: new formulas, new disciplines, ridiculous show elements and, ultimately, technology. Who cares about whatever achievement if we don't have a clue who are behind the performances? Track used to be great and popular because of great personalities. Nowadays we don't have a chance to get to now the real talented ones, they come and go, one-season world beaters. They come out of nowhere and they disappear without any trace.
IAAF or whatever it's called now should invest a lot more in media projects showing us who are those new generation African or in some cases European runners - the Ingebrigtsen has their own show which could be great if people could watch it in real-time at least with subtitles but the IAAF doesn't care.
No, the running shoes from 2015 were barely faster than Nike Spiridon Gold I wore in 1987.
The last few years has seen a big improvement.
Shoes used to be about being as light as possible and close to barefoot while protecting the foot. Now they are about returning more energy than a bare foot the equivalent of putting using a springboard as a long jump take off board.
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
