I run about 60-70 miles a week and work full time. Sometimes I have an extra 20 minutes or so in the morning or at lunch and add a 2-3 mile run (my main workouts are in the evening). These short runs add up to about 10 miles a week (not included in the 60-70 other miles). Is there any physiological benefit to this added mileage or is it just junk?

Under 20 minutes is junk.
However, short runs like that will do a great job of loosening you up for your main workout later in the day. So they probably do have a benefit in that sense.

There is no such thing as junk my friend. Run any chance you can get. I've read numerous studies that say as long as you run for at least 12 minutes, benefits are being realized. Every run you do from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed will add benefit, (given that its not a 5 minute shuffle).

It all adds up. Good quality and longer duration runs add up more quickly but distance training is a longterm, accumulative process. I would concentrate on going as easy as possible on those short runs though. The only time this extra mileage could be bad for you is if you run it hard enough to significantly increase your chance of injury.

you'd probably be better off doing 20 minutes of pushups/pullups/situps. if they are done in a cycle for 20 minutes straight it will become an aerobic workout as well, just not a long one
