It's a horrific mistake. "Disinformation" has too much in common with "Information I don't agree with." Fact checking, in the age of spin, is a matter of opinion.
It also rests on a pretty obvious logical flaw: if "disinformation" is so powerful and such a threat to democracy, then why doesn't it fool who it makes look bad? The Democratic Party has a serious problem with the perception of elite control, and this isn't helping.
You are right about perception problem.
But without knowledge of what the board actually does, it's hard to make a fair criticism.
If all the board does is study the problem and make recommendations, the only ones against it would be those who use disinformation. Again, that's why Republicans are so nervous.
With all due respect, everybody uses disinformation. And appearances matter way more than facts. I keep hearing my fellow Democrats use the term "safe for Democracy." It's telling that you can parse the meaning of this phrase by substituting "the Democratic Party" for the word "democracy."
"Not a Trumpist." Oh, the ABSURD continual denial......
A therapist MIGHT be able to help with this strange conviction of yours (and others).
What is your obsession with Trump? I am seriously asking you this. Many of the people I hang around with and work with are conservative (though there are liberals too). NOT ONE of us could give a flying F*ck about Trump. Trump is never even mentioned. The conservatives of us really despise what Biden and Co. is doing to the country, i.e., ruining it. Not one of us has mentioned Trump since he was defeated in the election. But you, Agip, Fat Hurts, Ginamator and every one of you Liberals are so deranged with Trump that you bring him up in every fricking one of your posts. Enough. Please post why you like biden and why we should support him. No more Trump. You Libs don't bring him up and we conservatives won't bring him up. This will be a Trump-free zone. Those who need their Trump fix can always go shoot up on the Trump thread.
You're still not honestly describing yourself, and the utter and complete relevance of Trump/Trumpism to the Biden administration and this country in general has been clearly and persuasively explained to you a MILLION times. THAT is your answer.
But you are either:
a) REALLY dumb.
b) Pretending (really dumbly).
Oh, and if NONE of the people you ever talk to understand that the BLINDINGLY obvious continuing relevance of Trump and Trumpism, you clearly need to elevate your intellectual surroundings.
What the hell, here's one more try at breaking it down for you:
1) You and others succeed in convincing everyone (in a ridiculously unbalanced way) that Biden's administration is HORRIBLE. And you might stop there and not compare to Trump, but you and others DON'T do that. You ALSO defend Trump. But for sake of argument, let's say that you JUST shrilly and excessively criticize Biden, and morans agree with you.
2) We get more Trump and/or Trumpism. FAR, FAR worse than what we have.
So, yeah, he's as relevant as can be, whether you speak his name or not.
Lastly, as I've alluded to before, show me 1,000 Americans who spends half their life talking about how HORRIBLE Biden is, and I'll show you AT LEAST 999 who would be thrilled to have Trump as president again. And you and every other vigorous Biden hater on this thread are surely in that 999.

You are here on LetsRun on the Joe Biden thread discussing Trump, and you are telling me I need to "elevate my intellectual surroundings." It doesn't get any better than that. Well done!

I can't speak for everyone but I think most of us just want a Republican congress in 2022 to hold back Biden and then depending on how the race goes we prefer someone like Desantis (governor of Florida) in 2024.

I would argue that ANY government agency (outside of the justice system) that is given even the appearance of discerning what is true or not is a danger, even if it is given minimal authority to actually do anything. Why? Because it allows for an "authority" of some sort to spew propaganda while diminishing the value of the truth. Even if this were in some weird universe actually a department that dedicated itself to actually fighting what is indisputable misinformation, that danger of abuse would still exist.
The government has no place in determining what is mis- or dis- or mal-information, that is literally the job of journalists: to inform the public. When the government does it, depending on context that is either called propaganda or censorship.
I'm pretty sure all you guys that are either supportive or momentarily indifferent to this development be horrified if Trump was the one establishing this, and that should tell anyone all they need to know about how bad of an idea this is.
If Trump did this it would be ironic, but I wouldn't necessarily oppose it.

What did the Trump admin do that proved worse than what has happened under Biden?
You know the (long) lists that would and have been given over and over again in reply to this question. So why ask it? It's not a real conversation. It's disingenuous, and just going around in circles.
"We" aren't going to convince you, and "you" aren't going to convince us. But we're stupid enough (all of us) to continue to waste our time trying. Really pretty strange and pathetic for ALL of us, I think.
But as mentioned before, I really would be pleased to have a thread where up-is-down Trumpers didn't speak. And maybe the Trumpers think the same about the Biden-isn't-the-antichrist crowd. And neither of those stances are necessarily close-minded. They're just "anti-talking-to-walls," I guess.

If skepticism towards government censorship regime makes one "Republican" then you are about to find out there are a lot more "Republicans" out there than you thought

Well, at least you've clarified the "dumb" versus "pretending to be dumb" question. I might add (incredibly) "simplistic" to the adjective list.

I didn't say I wasn't skeptical. But I don't get all hot and bothered until I know if my skepticism is well founded.

And by the way, imagine if your silly, narrow "thread title" crap was followed, and all of this discussion was in the "right" thread. Newflash: Your non-arguments would still s*** 100% as bad. It's really not about thread titles, moran.

The fact you think that there is a difference between Trump doing this and Biden doing this in terms of whether or not it is "ironic" is telling: they are both politicians, and they both have a well recorded history of lying and abusing their power.
Not everyone that is so nervous about this development are Republicans.
The only people that are supporting this are either totalitarians, Democrats too blinded by bias to see the danger, or people who are simply too ignorant to understand the danger. Look in a mirror and figure out which one you are.
Determining what is true, and what is dis- or mis- or mal-information, is not the job of anyone except judges (whose job is literally to attempt to determine the truth of a situation and interpret the laws involved), journalists (whose job is literally to inform the public), or we the people. It is NOT the job or right of the government in power. You don't have to be part of the "opposition party" to understand that.

Let me simplify for you:
Is your post about Trump, Trumpism, Trumpers, Trumpology, or Trumpificationism? Post in the Trump thread
Is your post about Biden? -> Post in Biden thread
Is your post just whining and hurling insults at people? -> Post in another thread, or consider not posting it

A few things:
1) Determining what is true, beyond those whom you listed, is clearly the job of scientists in general. Science is the on-going search for truth.
2) I think that the name of the board (Disinformation Governance Board) makes people unnecessarily nervous about it. If, in fact, it had the charter of policing all "speech" in all its forms then it would be an odd mix of scary and nutty. But its actual charter seems to be much narrower - focusing on countering Russian propaganda as well as that coming from human smugglers. Should we be against that? I'm not so sure.
The government played a huge role in fighting against the endless lies of the tobacco industry for decades. Was that role a terrible mistake? Did it lead to some Orwellian nightmare? Not as far as I can see. Is this "Disinformation Governance Board" something quite different, or does it just have an unfortunately chosen name (terribly chosen names being a Democratic Party specialty)?
