Could someone please explain to me what Koech was trying to do with his one lap surge? Was he planning to go hard all the way and just changed his mind after one lap?
I'll play track detective. I surmise that maybe there was talk and some kind of verbal agreement that the layers would push the pace, just like we talk about with other runners before a race to break a favorite. Then Koech went after Lagat's walk-a-thon lap 1, and expected a group of runners to go with him, thereby forcing Farah to make an early decision. When no one except Longosiwa did, Koech bagged it, knowing that he would have to contend with 4 or 5 legit guys in a pack who would wind it up for a late push if he faltered. So maybe a deal went bad.
