I was running five years ago when I large dog ran out from his yard, nipped at me and then tackled me. I grabbed it and choked it (I was not going to let go in the middle of the street) until the owner came by. He was upset that I choked the dog, and called me a wimp.
I told him it was clear my wrist was broken (it was). After spending a painful night in the emergency room, I went back to his house with my cast on. His wife was miserably embarrassed by this guy, and I did feel sorry for her. I told them the wimp comment was unfortunate, because unlike most people he knew I have access to the halls of power and I have money (I make a very good living and am trained as a lawyer myself). I obtained their address and contact and insurance information. I called the police about the incident. I then had a lawyer friend - in an excessive but nevertheless delightful move - he is President of the state trial lawyers association - contact his homeowners insurance company. The insurance company knew darn well who I engaged as counsel (he goes to trial and they hate that), and smelled trouble. They paid a sizable claim, worth more than a semester of Ivy League tuition for my kid (although not worth the broken wrist, mind you). I wrote the family a nice thank you for their cooperation in giving me them their contact information, and reminded the homeowner of the perils of calling people names and acting stupidly, because, well, you never know who has access to money and power, and well, when you are on the wrong end of it, well, life just sucks. The wife wrote back, apologized, and informed that they got rid of the dog. The bottom line is that dog owners are responsible for their dogs, period. I was happy to be able to remind my low IQ dog owner of that very fact.
