The canadian elite is right on. He is a professional making the right choice in his mind. All of us know that a marathon takes a lot out of us and he only has so many in mind. Heck, I don't even like running the local YMCA 5K when I feel less than my best. I can not imagine what a pro running a marathon would feel. He is 100% right on.
Well exactly and what would have happened to the asylum if he ran 2:10 - being unfit?

More info at the link below:

Hey Wejo, maybe the info from this ad will help Ryan Hall. See whether u agree w the facts it asserts abt American runners' weaknesses.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hqspH_OTzA&feature=player_embeddedMaybe Hall needs to watch this himself and see what can be done regarding his stride, rather than merely working on the various energy systems? Please relay this to him if u r able.
hahahaha best post in the thread

The sun would likely still rise on the Monday morning if he ran a lousy race because of lack of fitness. But guys like Hall don't run 2:10 because they are not in shape. They run 2:10 when they arrive ready to do 2:07 and then have a rough day at the office. They go out hard and then fall off the pace because things aren't working on the day. They RARELY run 2:10 because they are in 2:10 pace and pace themselves accordingly. Guys like Hall are wired to compete and setting off in the third pack is most often just too difficult.
Hall runs well because he sees himself as a challenger and lays it on the line accordingly. When guys like him are not in good shape and then run aggressively (like Hall is good at doing), they end up running 2:16-20 or DNF'ing. It is a very painful and unfortunately very memorable. It creates the type of mental baggage that is difficult to shed. For non-Africans a big blowup can take a few years to overcome.
Assuming the goal is an Olympic medal in 2012, racing unfit is just not a good play. Trust me when I say that this would put him back for a long time. Further, it could make him cautious for the next time out. The fear of another blowup can take years to overcome. To challenge for a podium finish in 2012, he needs to be supremely fit and to carry no baggage from disastrous races or major blowups.
This must be what GOD wants.
Ryan Hall could have still run in the race and made some of the fans happy. He should have just renegotiated to be a pacer. That way, he still gets to put his training to use on a fast run out front with the leaders. When he can't go on, he drops and nobody makes a big deal of it. If he can keep going, then he'll do something amazing and he won't have had the pressure. I don't think he's thoroughly explored his options well enough.
I agree for the most part. I don't mean to bash Hall, I'm just playing armchair coach with the luxury of hindsight. It just is what it is.
The 2:09:02 at the '07 trials (Hall was incredible that day) is equivalent to a 2:04:42 on a London/Berlin style course. Central Park takes a good 10 seconds per mile off your pace with the constant hills. So in essence, he ran a :59, a 2:08, 2:04, 2:06 and then the 2:12 at the OG- All within 18 months. That is a lot of intense running in a short amount of time. I hope Ryan can recharge his batteries and bring it back . He is an enormous talent and I am rooting for him.
Well I didn't say how he would run that 2:10 and I didn't mention that I would doubt he would run 2:10 for any reason other than he fell apart or something...when he would be going for a much better time.
What I was saying was...in a sense...he wouldn't be able to please everyone at Let's Run, because if he up and ran a poor race, he would have been crucified here. Not running was a better choice.
Wow, there certainly are lots of people who have no idea what it is like to run anywhere in the neighborhood of 2:0anything on here (myself included). We obviously are the perfect judges of what is going on with his running right now. Great work. It's like groundhog day everyday on these boards.
Why don't we let Ryan do what Ryan does. Let him train in a few good cycles and get ready for the Olympics. I love the idea of Chicago, but apparently this is not the time.
Let's be supportive of a great runner and let him get his training going well once again. The fact that every runner goes through ebbs and flows in their training and racing seems yet again lost on the armchair quarterbacks who are Letsrun posters. It was not so long ago that people were saying Solinsky had no shot as a pro and was going to amount to nothing. Why don't we all focus on the great things happening in American distance running and stop being a bunch of idiots on a message board who mock one of the greatest runners of our time. We have a lot to be positive about as fans of the sport right now.
he could have saved himself a lot of grief by citing injur¥. At least he's honest, if not exactl¥ media savv¥.
66 minute half was run on a downhill course with the wind at her back. The 2:25 was run on a hilly NYC course not known to produce blazing fast times. I think if she had run Chicago instead that would have been a 2:22.

You would think that Salazar would of had some success coaching the marathon, but it has not yet happened. Kara has run 66 minutes for a half marathon and 2:25 marathon. That does not equate.
that video rocked, but all the guy did was take shots at Hall, Meb and Lehmkule
love that Hall takes a shot at the Letsrun.com crowd
of course being that he is super fatigued and needs rest he's flying from Mammoth to Kona then from Kona to Chicago..nothing like bunch of 6-12 hour flights to get your body right
You may all run tons, even the trolls, but who has trained like Hall? Endless miles, running being your entire LIFE 24/7? Give the guy a break, and for that matter, give Mahon a break. Elite racing is a fine line, and none of us know why he pulled out, so just stop. Don't you all have anything better to do?
