Has everyone been checking out the Atlantic Region home page? Its pretty sweet. Marks been doing a great job with it.
In one last response about the Buff State meet, here are three facts (not something that someone thought they heard)
1. Tom Proctor (new buff st coach) said that he measured the course twice with Tim Burns, head WNY Official. First measurement was 175 meters long. They shaved off what they thought was the right distance but when it was re-measured on Friday, it was still a shade long. In order to keep the common finish for men and women, they left the men's course a shade long with the idea that they would get it right for the SUNYACS
2. Jeff Weiss (The Rock) ran 14:35 and beat the fabled C Fred at Bucknell last spring. Two weeks later at the Penn Relays, Weiss ran 14:28. Both he and Medina are legit runners and it should be no surprise to anyone that they opened the season at 25:21 for 5 miles.
3. A 10-second pack (15 second 1-6) is absolutely incredible no matter how long the course is.
Show Geneseo a little respect. If Cortland is so tough as some on here say, show up at Oswego and go toe to toe with Geneseo and SLU.
nyu will be opening up with a 5k at hofstra, was told they wont be running their top 8-9 guys.
full team will open at their home meet on 9/16
what is the atlantic region website?
I find it hard to believe that the Buff State course was long and yet a freshman and mcgrath ran a minute faster than jeff beck and ted turner ran a few short years ago. I know that turner was all american that year in XC with a top 10 place but I also think beck was AA (i may be wrong there tho). Either way, something was up with this course, nobody ever breaks 26 on that course if you look at previous years. I guess we will see at oswego.
If you read the post above it was 175m+ long in the past which would make it pretty hard to break 26.
I have no doubts the course is short. I understand that Weiss and Medina are quality runners, and Geneseo does tend to have a strong team, but look at the overall results and compare them to past years. It isn't just the first 10 spots, look farther down the list. Look at the guys in 15th place, 30th place, 50th place, the race was across the board a minute(or more) faster than the two previous years. Now I can understand weather playing some role in it, but a pretty uniform minute wide gap between last years times and this years? No way was that course long, and I highly doubt it was 8k.
This is the course that everyone ran. It is not short. Just because you guys were not there to enjoy the fast times this year doesnt mean that other people cant run well. Malone, and SRU are good teams, and their guys didnt run insanely fast this year. Also, the Brockport men ran reasonable times this year. The gap persists all across the board because there were more teams entered in the race this year. Last year, the grass was long so it was almost like running through a field, and it had rained all summer, so the ground was like a sponge which feels real nice on your legs for the first 8k of the year. This year the grass was golf course short and the ground was hard and fast. None of these things diminish Geneseo's performance.
The course was clearly shorter than previous years, that is not in question. The course at Buff State has been very long for years, and until this year has been run in 95 degree heat every year, where finishing without passing out from dehydration has been a feat in and of itself. The fact of the matter is that the course was infact shortened from last year, but the overall length was still a little over 8k. For the reasons mentioned above, this is entirely reasonable (see Medina and weiss). Either way, Oswego will tell if this was a fluke or if the times are legit. Should be a great race (if Cortland shows up).
The Oswego meet won't tell anything. That's course is fast as lightning as well. My PR (by 30 seconds)is on that course and we trained through the meet
It wont? Pretty much every SUNYAC course is flat and fast so why would the Oswego meet not tell us anything? Geneseo runs against Cortland and their high expectations for the first time and the darkhorse St. Lawrence is definitely gonna do their best to mix it up with 2 of the teams they will be fighting with for top 5 at regionals.
Also, i love watching the finish at Oswego every year and seeing atleast 25% of the runners be absolutely dead for that final 200 meter finish over uneven and uphill ground. I've seen kids practically reduced to walking over the past few years because that last 200 meters does just enough to push them over the edge and crack them from normal finishing pace.
i agree that oswego is also a fast course. But if cortland races their top men then it will show where geneseo and cortland are in comparison considering everyone has these two teams finishing in the top 4 at regionals. granted it is a smaller and less competitive meet than regionals, it will also show how teams like SLU and brockport are looking in comparison to the big guns.
you guys fail to realize that cortland isnt racing their top team.
the course was 8000 meters long. It was shorter than prior years because because previously it was 8175 meters long. That plus cooler weather made it a faster course.

Thanks Coach.
well with that list posted, it comes down to geneseo running away with the race and SLU a distant second. the score may appear to be close but the field lost a lot of depth with cortland not running their top men and brockport not running at all. my guess is that geneseo will have their top 5-7 in the top 10-12 and SLU to have top 5 in the top 20 overall.
Id say thats a very safe and accurate prediction XC fan.
This will be a good chance for Ithaca, Alfred, Oswego, and Houghton to try and get their top runners to run with SLU and try and close down that gap from the top 5 or so teams in the region to the rest of the teams.
Im not saying that any of those teams have even close to the same talent as SLU...Just saying this is a chance for their runners to see a lot of red and white on saturday and see how they can stack up against a formidable regional power without 10-15 others teams in the mix.
