Newbury Park is trying their best with a youth coach. I feel bad for this new guy. The parents have a petition going around to make sure he’s not hired in track because of the issues he’s causing. At the end of the day the man is trying his best. He just doesn’t understand training and dealing with parents. Unfortunately that’s a big part of HS.
I've followed this thread and ones like it off and on, and I keep seeing people reference that the current coach was a youth coach. The connotation amongst those comments seems to be that there is inherently something wrong with him because he was a youth coach, or that he fundamentally can't succeed at the high school level due to his experience with youth.
However, I never see anyone write specific complaints. As someone who has only followed this program from afar and doesn't know any of the players personally, I don't understand the vague, negative references to his youth days. In what ways does that make him unqualified? I'm not even necessarily digging for dirt, but I just think it's weird that commenters here reference that as if we should automatically know how that makes him unfit to coach high schoolers. Is he undertraining the athletes? Overtraining them? Talking to them like they're little kids, without expecting accountability befitting their developmental stage? Is he not used to working with a school athletic director? I just feel like if people are going to consistently put him down on here, they should give some actual reasons.
Fletcher was faster than Guevera, Dickran, Schohn… at Clovis. Not sure what happened to him since, but he ran better today than he did at Marmonte league final. Maybe he will get back there in a few weeks.
Schohn (not there today) has been right behind Dickran all year. Only 7s behind at Marmonte league final.
Porter was ahead of Bernardino and only 10s behind Dickran today.
Herrera in theory should be fast, but he did not run well all year
Watson had one good race
Bernardino was actually slower than Fletcher today (and Porter…)
so I say that 5,6 and 7 should be Fletcher, Schohn and Porter. Not necessarily in that order
This youth coach you guys are complaining about was the very guy coaching the feeder team of "incredibly talented" kids who went on to Newbury Park. When he got miracle results then, it was just the kids having talent; when he gets lesser results now, the kids aren't talented and no one could do it with this lack of talent, right? But as someone says above, 2020/2021 wreaked havoc on middle school track #'s, so it's much harder to judge.
Dude, you just proved the point. He coached both the 2019 team kids and the current kids as youth.
He didn’t coach any of the Youngs or Sahlmans as youth… They all came from Camarillo and he coached Newbury Park.
The top 7 are probably going to be: Doshi, Shetty, Guevara, Fletcher, Dickran, Schohn, Porter So 6 seniors and 1 sophomore.
Fletcher was with the top guys on the team first mile, and then he dropped back. Not sure what happened. He ran a 16:00 5k at Clovis.
They should rest Fletcher and Porter at SS final, who have raced the past 2 weeks.
1) Hope that extra week of rest will help Fletcher to get back to being #3 man at CIF final. He was 56s behind Dickran at Marmonte final, but was only 25s behind Dickran yesterday, so he is getting back to form.
2) Rest up Porter, who seems to be getting in shape as he was only 10s behind Dickran. It would be great if he could move up to being the 5th man.
They could replace Fletcher and Porter with Bernardino and Herrera.
I feel they still have a 1% chance to qualify for NXN.
They would all need to run the best race in their life.

Good points. I’ve had similar experience as a Special Ed. Teacher. But a teacher or coach is what they prove themselves to be in the job they do. The skills and dedication for “youth league” or kids with disabilities are at least as demanding (if not more so!) than with so-called normal or regular kids. And the personal commitment a bit dicier because of the unfortunate idea that it is a lesser calling.
This comment is horrible these kids are trying their best and unless you know what each kid has gone through on a personal basis stop judging makes it sound like you are the looser.

I have completed my warmup and am now much the looser.
Sloans are at Ventura now. Noah did well at their recent Gaucho Invitational. But in addition to Herrera, NP has Asa Fletcher in his SOP. (1:54 @ 800/4:29 @1600/ 9:56 @3200)
Didn’t Fletcher come from Virginia? I thought when you move you can run varsity right away.
Fletcher came from my school in Virginia. An outstanding, hard-working, mature young man who was a 5-time state champion in outdoor track in Class 2. We miss him here but we all wish him and Newbury Park nothing but success!
