They only interviewed 28 women, and "almost half" of them had bad things to say. The women interviewed were the ones identified by the initial complainer and presumably the only ones that might have had issues. That's 13 or less out of more than 400 athletes in their decades of coaching.
That's a darn good success rate. Any top 10 D1 women's team is going to have the same exact complaints. Look at Starliper saying Henes couldn't keep her healthy for example. When only 7 out of 20+ can make a nationals roster, it gets competitive.
Yes, I agree. I don’t know if the CU culture is toxic and this report does not reflect a representative sample of athletes so it’s far from conclusive, though not super encouraging either. My point was a broader one, that a toxic work environment should not be confused with a rigorous one and you can achieve great things as a coach without being a jerk or encouraging jerky behavior in others and on the team and grinding up many of your athletes.
I'm female and ran for CU under Wetmore. It was rigorous, not toxic. I never saw or experienced anything besides excellent coaching. Wetmore set an appropriately high bar.....as should be the case at a DI program.
Yeah CU is so terrible and has such a bad culture that Cook, Starliper, and now Dishon are all running to the mountains of Colorado?!?!?! Watch out NCAA here comes the Buffs this fall!!!!
I stayed up to 1 am to read the final 5 pages I hadn't read to see if anyone had pointed that out.
Will it not be kind of hilarious if they win NCAA xc next year thanks to 3 transfers when the first few pages were full of people saying, "No one will run for them ever again." CU seems to do way better in the portal than in HS recruiting. To nab an impressionable HSer, you have to do a LOT of work and really inflate their egos a lot. Not something Mark wants to do.
To get a transfer, they often come to you, particularly at CU as a lot of athletes want to try altitude.
Besides three outstanding transfers, they have the 2022 Footlocker Champion coming in as well! How ironic is it that this bogus article comes out in RW and most people in this thread are saying no one would send or is going to send their daughter to CU and 4 All American caliber runners are going there. Wake up people!!! Obviously RW is full of you know what?!?! The truth is found in who’s going there NOW, who is staying there NOW, and what past professional athletes are saying like Emma, Jones, and Simpson who all strongly support CU and Wetmore! Can the nonsense please stop? Stop spreading fake news!
It’s sad that an excellent coach who has furthered running for decades can have their reputation tarnished bc some loser requires butt-kissing for their pedestrian results and effort. Then, other tribal internet trolls jump on the bandwagon to besmirch the coach just for fun, clicks, and gossip.
I’m going to go out on a limb to say that Wetmore probably was not totally on point in everything he’s said to runners over his lifetime of coaching. How many of us can claim perfection in all of our relationships and interactions? It’s a sick joke that a coach of his caliber is being criticized here based on the “evidence” provided. Undoubtedly, there are strong, talented, and tough (and coachable) female runners deserving of victories and recognition. There are obviously others of low integrity who choose to focus on lesser things, and they can bring entire teams a bit downward (as in this case). In the last page or so there have been a few commenters - eyeroll, hmmm.., and buffalotta - who do you think ran well and is better position to excel in whatever they do owing to their winning and responsible attitude? Yet, any advisement appears to be off the table lest it be deemed “toxic” or “disparaging”. Of course, this can be true for runners and coaches of either gender, but this thread has been zeroing in on male coaches with female runners.

What is your name? You should want to divulge it if you are going to make false accusations. I don't believe that you ran there. I believe that you were a slow D3 runner.

You think it is a sign of low integrity to point out outdated coaching methods or outdated physiological methods that defeat the entire process? That's really a weird take, bc usually it's a sign of integrity to want a program to be..idk at least up to date on the thing they are supposed to be great at.

I’m also female and also ran for CU under Wetmore, and it was neither entirely excellent nor extremely toxic, just medium toxic at 25 ppm.
Any of us can be female and have ran for CU under Wetmore; or not.
So, you are here just trying to do your part to make the program better? Got it. That’s totes believable bc idk most people who really wanted to do that would usually go about it differently. My bad, obvi.
Notice how these problems always involve the women. Men never complain about this stuff. Women bring drama and headaches.
Except Gabe Fendel but don’t let facts get in the way of an unhinged male grievance rant.
Anyone know why Kashon Harrison never really ran again after his freshman xc season?
That has always been a mystery to me. He had an excellent season until NCAAs, where he bombed, which isnt atypical for a freshman. The team finished 4th but may have won had he run well. I have seen Wetmore publicly blame runners for a team's poor performance and it clearly impacted those runners. Wondering if that happened with Kashon. He also could have just found other interests and no longer cared about running for reasons unrelated to Wetmore. But it makes you think. Teams can be toxic in many ways.
I’m also female and also ran for CU under Wetmore. It was EXTREMELY to toxic and I saw and experienced a lot of problematic behavior from the coaching staff. Wetmore set a high bar for toxicity, which should never be the case
Give your Name, PRs, and years attended or else you are lying and full of Buffalo chit.
While we're at it, what was your body fat composition and best results?
Saying that Chris Severy's death (a cycling accident) was due to Wetmore is EXACTLY what these other people are doing (but to a lesser extent). It's the perfect thread summary.
